I've picked up two of these this month and one last month. The special ends on Dec 31 and I thought I'd remind ya'll these are very nice rifles. $49.95 each.

The rifles appear to be refinished. The blue is dark black and high quality. All three of my rifles were 95-100% blue.

The stocks are new, rough, unoiled with only a few minor dings if any. The bores are bright, crisp and shiny. One of the bores has a couple of pits, nothing major though. The other two bores look to be VG+ to excellent. The cleaning rods have seen better days, a little corroded and bent.

Bolts did not match but what the hell, they're turks. You should have them headspaced. I didn't yet.

You even get a poor to fair bayo with it.

I just fixed one up to give my dad for Christmas. I took some 000 steel wool and soaked it in Old English lemon oil and briskly sanded the stock thoroughly. I wiped it down with a clean cloth and let it sit for about a half hour. Then I checked for any rough spots I missed and did it again. After another half hour or so I took some very fine 320 grit sand paper to the stock being careful not to mar the band springs which I didn't remove. Then I wiped it down really good an applied a coat of boiled linseed oil. I wiped off the excess and let it sit for a few hours. When I came back home I applied two more coats of BLO. It's nicely moisterized now and the grain looks wonderful. A little bit of tiger stripe and alot of pattern. Very very easy to do and all told it took only a couple hours from bore cleaning to finishing, not counting down time.

looks great.

Well I'm gonna start on one of my Swedes' wood today.

Your method sounds more like fun.

Those other methods of wood restoration sound like too much work. I want it to be a labor of love, not toil.

Another thing that gives me some concern is using those extreme PH's of acids and bases to leach the wood.

If you don't thoroughly neutralize them, they'll corrode the metal of the receiver and barrel,I should think.
Anyhoo-thanks for the instructs on how you done it.

Great price, cool looking rifle. I think this will be the next purchase. The headspace issue scares me but I'll just have to get a gauge. Of course, I promised I'd fix my SAR before getting another rifle but the 2nd M44 I ordered killed that pact. :( :D

I had all three of my VG Turks checked with a field gauge and they wearn't even close to closing on it, so I'd say your chances are good on the headspacing on these.

clearblue, let us know how it works out for you. I think you'll like both the Turk and the CZ52. I got my CZ52 from Century tooo.

For sure!

I've received the CZ52 already and it is exactly as advertised by Century, excellent condition , new barrel, reddish brown plastic grips, almost new, just a few scratches and one used, one new clip. Went to local gun store for ammo to evaluate but they only had corrosive stuff so I'll order some NC from internet.

The Turks still aren't in -maybe Monday.

Redstar, I am in the process of cleaning up my Century VG Turk. Is it common for the VG to be so dirty and caked with cosmo? The metal is the black color bluing and the wood is not cracked or anything but it is dirty as can be. Is this to be expected for VG rating?

Thanks

I'm not Redstar, but in answer to your question. IMO yes this is typical for a VG condition M38 Turk. Better to be caked in Cosmoline than caked in layers of rust. That's why the cosmoline is on these rifles. My guess is that they are a batch of arsenal rebuilt rifles that were cosmolined for long term storage. Lucky us.

Sorry!! I haven't been getting down here to Mausers much since Shuetz is a Mauser Extraordinaire.

When you mentioned that in another post Singha I was surprised because all three of the Turks I ordered were bone dry. No rust either thank goodness but really bone dry and the metal was refinished, with new unoiled, dry, rough stocks. The bores were semi mirror to mirror with no pitting. No rust or pitting anywhere else either.

Maybe yours is from a different batch.

As far as a rating goes, dirt doesn't come into the equation. For Century, you need to read their grading standards posted on their site somewhere or in the back of their catalog. Their grading of good is what I would call a fair, but sometimes they really surprise you, especially on anything rated VG or better. That's been my experience with them. If you order good don't expect anything above good, and you may get fair or poor IMO. There's a NRA grading scale on the for sale guidelines in the for sale section. NRA standards are a little low side IMO. In other words I would expect a little better for something called good than they would.
