Finally received the two stock sets from
Randolph. Nice looking, original unissued
stuff. The problem is that he hasn't been
reading our threads on type classing!!!
I ordered 1 Type III AK-47, and one "general" AKM set. What I received is a Type II
AK stock, an AKM stock (OK), two bakelite grips, one with mold numbers, two upper handgaurds which are slightly longer and wider than my Russian gas tube, and the AK-47
retainer spring does not fit in either one,
one post '71 AKM lower handgaurd, and of all
things, a genuine laminated AK-74 lower hangaurd, complete with rear retaining spring, and without vent holes. Anyone interested in trades for style II AKM wood?
or should I just send it back? -C

The guy does know the difference. I met him at the Tulsa show last year. Sounds like a honest mistake X 3. The upper hand guards - Yugo? The buttstock would be hard to sell, as you know. The AK-74 handguards are nice, but are not that tough to find.

What do you guys think? Any experiences with returns?

The uppers are most likely Russian. New Russian wood uppers always must be hand fitted, they are made a hair longer/wider on the mounting lips so they can be tightly fitted by an armorer.

Thanks for the info guys...
I have decided to hang on to the parts for now, using some, trading others.
Good to know the uppers are indeed Russian.
Ekie, the type II stock won't be hard to get
rid of...I have decided to build one. I got
almost all the parts yesterday, and I'm swapping some of my "type III parts" with proper t3 parts, including bolt carrier http://www.ak-47.net/akcgi/wink.gif and T3 will now have all laminate wood. Solid will go to T2 project. I'm sick yes, I know.
Now I need to get FiringLine to build me
a T2 receiver! -C

Oooh yes the Russain uppers have oversized inleting and need a lot of fitting. I thought he was saying the whole handguard was longer like a Yugo.

Do your upper handguards have pencil marking on the lower unfinished side?

Good luck on the Type II AK-47.

No pencil marks what-so-ever Ekie. Should
have mentioned they could be fitted, as length is only oversized by 1mm and width
by about 3mm- enough not to be drop in replacemements, that's for sure. Even the front aspect curvature seems more parabolic
than the 4 original Russian ones I have, which appear vertical on the sides (well they are 40 years old!). That's what made me question them. -C

Did you get a AKM buttstock with the swivel on the side?

I have noticed that some Russian handguards have pencil marking in them. Have no idea why.

AKM handguards are not all the same, that is for sure. There is some variance in AK-74 upper handguards too.

Nope http://www.ak-47.net/akcgi/frown.gif It has the bottom swivel-
but with the Tokoi book I received today, at least I know what to look for! Also picked up
a softcover book by Ezell, "Small Arms Today"
which lists Tokoi in the credits. It is a listing of every country's arms in use for the year 1988. Some interesting pics too.
With the Tokoi book, I have already Identified almost all the foriegn stocks sets I have come across, found even more AK-47 variances, and positevely ID'd most of my Soviet AK and AKM parts. The book doesn't go into too much detail with regard to Russian variations (at least not as far as we have gone!) but it is still an outstanding publication. Thanks for the info on this one
Ekie!
Talked to Mike from FiringLine today, a Type
II receiver is a possibilty, albeit an expensive one. Anybody have detailed mechanical drawings of a T2 receiver???

I like the Small Arms Today for the NSN numbers, and the detail on who uses what.

On the Tokoi book, it is the detailed in photos thats for sure. I know of no book that is a detailed in the little things as our AK-47/AKM/AK-74 threads we did here over the last month.

EKIE,
You had me scratching my head when you asked about "Pencil Marks" on the inside of the russian upper handguard. Well your right. I found what appears to be the letter "P" written in pencil on a set of ak-74 russian wood from finnbear.

Came into this hobby just a bit too late to get finnbear stuff. :(

Ever figure out what pencil marks mean?:)

I was wondering the same thing myself.

Those posts with the 'x's are posts that are before 'time' ;)
In otherwords, ones from the pre-Ak-47.net meltdown.... before
the re-registration? something like that....some old sheeite!
