OK, OK, OK, I know this topic has been hit before, but there are some things that a still unclear to me.

I've got a Russian stock set that was *painted* green sometime presumably by the arabs when fighting the israelies. I've taken off the green coating on top and gotten down to the laminated wood grain. Yeah I know people shy away from sanding, but I didn't want a coat of nasty ass russian green paint covering the wood's grain.

Now, after paint removal, when in light the stock set almost looks camouflaged becasue of the laminated layers and how their grains show differently in light. Light, the dark, then light is the pattern you get because of the laminated layers. It's almost kind of a tigerstripe effect. The stripes are not that consistant nice soviet red/brown color either; it's kind of greenish/brown/slightly red.

I was wondering if I were to apply some sort of stain to the stock would it take care of this strange effect cause by the cross-graining of the laminated wood? As for stain, I have seen people suggest an orange-red dye. What kind of dye is this? fabric dye? I went to home depot and they've never heard of it.

Also, I've been toying with the idea of using dirty motor oil as a stain. I've read that wwii mausers were sometimes stained with that because of low supplies. Were AK's the same way, or were that all cherry red/orange/brown because of the great soviet supply system (even though when I got mine they were painted green)? I'm trying to replicate the way the *majority* of them looked when they were first introduced.

Oh yeah, this is a type III AK-47, not an akm.

Thanks if you managed to read all that.
