Need recommendations on which .22LR ammo

Hello all,

Have a couple semi pistols and semi rifles; any recommendations for a "jam-free" brand of "FMJ" .22LR? I fugure the better the copper jacket, the less prone to jamming - especially on the pistols.

Unfortunately there is no "one brand" that works equally well in all rimfires. What one likes, another may choke on.

The best solution is to grab several varieties and see what they like best. You may even find you need two or more brands to keep them all happy.

That's the opposite of what I've experienced. All of mine eat Rem bulk pack but a few choke on the Fed.

+1 on Federal bulk, -1 on Rem bulk.

Also, I don't know of any true jacketed .22LR. There is a bunch of copper plated stuff that you can still use on "lead only" rated plates that people say cuts down on fouling. You might have already known that, I just thought I'd mention it.

I've had Winchester X-pert, Remington 22 Golden, and the copper plated Federal.

The Federal stuff is the only bulk load that works reliably in all of my guns.

I have one of those WASR22 semi AK rifles. Not exactly Ruger quality, but off the coolness charts.

I had a stash of .22LR ammo to shoot through; tried old Rem Thunderbolt (RNL), which cycled the action just fine, then ran out of it and switched to some type of Winchester (CRN) X-something in a white box, which IIRC was 40gr and with no visible lube.

The Win cycled the action just fine as well, but then I started to get some FTFeed hang-ups, which I thought was due to lead fouling from the Rem T-bolts.

Then switched to CCI MiniMags in Copper RNose. No huge improvement over the Win in terms of cycling the action or correcting the FTF's. If anything, the waxy coating was easily visible and coming off the CCI rounds as I loaded the mags - probably fouling it worse. the Win ammo had no such coating.

I'm thinking that for a rifle with such loose tolerances, until I make the effort to do some feed-ramp-area polishing, I should be sticking to the longest CRN load out there.
And I think the longest CRN 40gr load around is the Win - all others I can find are hollow-points - and the Win isn't cheap.

Am I on the right track, or are all 22LRs the same "length", and the "40gr" stuff is a non-issue?

This is the best shooting round I have found formy marlin 60. It is also the cheapest at just under $10 for the bulk pack at WM.

I am a fan of the CCI Mini-Mags. I have had good luck with the round nose Remingtons too. I tried to use some Remington Thunderbolts in my Ruger Mk III. That gun did not seem to like the conical shape of the bullets and would jam on a regular basis. Once I get rid of the Remington stuff I think I will be sticking with the CCI.

+1 on the CCI mini-mags. Great ammo but a little pricey for .22. If you want to spend a little less, I have had very good results with Peters lead round nose. Gander Mtn usually has bricks for 10-12 bucks. Its made by Remington I believe (RP) and its a brown box with a duck on it.

I did some feed-ramp and "chamber area" polishing on my WASR22 since the original post.

Basically I want to tune the gun for the cheapy RNL ammo like the Fed Champion or Rem T-bolt, since I can't find bulk CRN ammo. (Don't know about where you all live, but around Pittsburgh, it seems like ALL bulk pack 22LR is either RNL or HP. I have yet to find copper RN in cheapy bulk boxings.)

I went by Wally Mart and tried some Fed Champion 40gr RNL - for $1.10/50rds it worked fine. Also tried a Fed "bulk" pack of 550 rds of CHP - worked fine but few more jams than the lead stuff. I'll save this for the Henry.

Also tried some pricey Remington Golden Bullets in copper round nose without issues.

I use Fed bulk in the semis and trying to get rid of the rem in the levers.
The rems one time sounds like a snap pop then next time like the barrels blowing up, several stove pipes and duds in either type of gun.
Feds sound clear and crisp and accurate.
I also used some CCI 40 grains and they work good, but i'll stick with 36 grain.
I would aslo like to try some mini mags!

For 40 years I swore by Remington green box for everything from competition to squirrels and rabbits. Got my 10-22 and it didn't like it. Spent damn near $500 trying to find what it liked because I wanted to be competitive in club shoots. To my complete disgust it prefers CCI SSG, both Federal and Remington 36 gr bulk pack stuff and completely jams up with anything waxy. Tried it in my S&W M41 pistol and it likes the same stuff. All the money I could have saved....sigh. Nephew in law, (is that what you call a nieces husband), 10-22 hates all 3 kinds but he shoots mine anyway because the price is right, free.

I had a few FTF with several of my 10/22s no matter what ammo I used. Then I picked up one of Rimfire Technologies stainless guide rods, not more problems.
