What to get? 762x39 or 30 whisper, which mags work?

.300 Whisper is not exactly an off the shelf round, you'll have to handload for it. What mags work, primarily the 20 rounders I'm thinking. It will shine with a silencer as it is virtually silent when fired.

I was looking at doing this conversion myself. I had just about decided on a DPMS lower with a 7.62x39 upper from Model "1" Sales. There are a few draw backs to it though. There isn't really a solid High cap mag out yet. There are 5s and 10s, but this may change soon if C Products has any luck with the 30 rounders.

Also, there is problems with shooting harder primer ammo due to the fact that the firing pin doesn't protrude out far enough, and sometimes won't make a solid strike to the primer, causing a non-fire. You can take a little bit of metal off of the bolt the resolve this issue, or use american softer primer ammo.

I also heard a lot of people say that the bolts give out a lot sooner since they were designed for .223 and not the larger 7.62.

I spoke with a few owners that have the setup and they loved it, but one guy said get an AK first if you don't already have one. He had both and said the AK is just more suited for the 7.62.

Check out the 6.5 Grendel round from Alexander Arms, it's an excellent round with the power of nearly a .308!

6.8 is supposed to be good.
