View Full Version : Hole In Primers

I have a semi-auto, Poly Tech AKS223 underfolder purchased in the mid 1980's. It's pretty high time as far as number of rounds fired through it and has developed a problem. When the weapon is fired, the firing pin punches a hole in the primer (regardless of ammo type). A piece of the primer will typically find it's way into the bolt and cause a stoppage. Weapon has been visually inspected and the only thing out of the ordinary found is some slight wear on the face of the breach. The breach face is worn to the point that you can see a "step" where the larger of the bolt contact areas hits it. I'm suspecting that I have somehow developed some sort of headspacing problem. I of course, no longer fire it.

Regarding the same weapon but somewhat unrelated, if the problem is the barrel breach being worn and barrel replacement is required, can the 223 barrel be replaced with a 7.62X39 one? Would any modifications be required to the reciever itself or would it be a straight parts R&R (barrel, bolt, carrier, etc)?

Any thoughts from the AK crowd here would be welcome. Thanks.

I had the same problems with my Poly Tech .223 The only thing you have to change to convert to 7.62x39 is the barrel/gas block and bolt. The barrel trunion and the mag well opening are the same...Here is the end result

Nice setup ya got there Tampstick! I'm into shorties myself. Run an 11.5" M16 as my standard flame thrower. May do the SBR with my AK in the end. Not sure though. I have a full length 7.62 barrel/bolt & carrier laying around but barrel change level of maintenance on AK's is new to me.

From the looks of the area just aft of your gas block you've heated her up quite nicely. I like it!
