I've noticed that their is not much AR-10 discussion going on. I don't own an AR-10, but my brother is looking to trade me even up, for my Imbel FAL. Any opinions? He claims, his AR-10, is a factory rifle, with a colapsable stock, 16 inch barrel and Bayo lug. Is this, for real? I thought Armalite never built any AR-10's with Bayo lugs. etc. I'll watch this thread with intrest. If I don't get a reply, I'll try posting this on the, AR-15 weapon forum. Thanks

I cant help you on the trade. But I have parts on order to build an Armalite AR-10. Building from a stripped Eagle Arms lower, going to have a 16" barrel with rails. Everything should be showing next week. Parts cost alot more then the standard AR-15.

Straightandnarrow, I purchased my first and only Armalite back around 2001 or 2002. At the time, I had a need for an extremely accurate long range semi auto weapon because a friend of mine had a permit to cull deer off of his place due to an overpopulation of does.

I actually dug it out of the safe to identify it for this post, and it is an Armalite AR10A4. However, if you go to the armalite website, it does not resemble the AR10A4 on their picture. Mine has a match grade stainless bull?barrell and a match grade 2 stage trigger. It has a 'muzzle brake' on the end of the barrel, and the furniture is green. I think mine might have even been called a Navy model? I mounted a Leupold bullet drop compensating scope on it, model M3, Vari-X III 3.5-10 X 40mm. (Dug the box out too to make sure I was accurate on this post.)

I could tell you stories all afternoon about what I've shot with it in Texas, but suffice to say it is the most accurate long range rifle I own. At 200 yards, you can see parts a flyin' off the deer. In the scope. At 400 yards I can shoot a grapefruit every time. That's a Florida grapefruit, not a south Texas large sweet.

The recoil is very manageable, as the rifle is fairly heavy for what it is; I know there's lots of opinions out there on that, but this rifle stays on target when you shoot it for the most part. I put a Wilderness systems tactical sling on it which I think has always helped. If you do buy an Armalite, I heavily suggest you follow the break in procedure. Again, lots of opinions on that, too, but you know what Dirty Harry said about opinions...... Recently, I noticed the Armalite site seems to have updated their break in technical notes to advocate the use of moly bullets. I've never done so, but I intend to do some more research on the subject.....it just makes owning one of these fine rifles even more fun. Hope this post helps and gets it rollin'. Westex over.

Thanks for the info and the disscussion. I went on Gunsamerica and found an AR-10, with bayo lug, 16" barrel and retractable stock, for sale listed as " Shorty AR-10", NIB. $1695.00. Better yet, I got to shoot my brother's yesterday. I love my FAL, but I tell you what, his AR-10 is incredable! It's in, A2 configuration. I attached my crappy , 3-9 scope on it and grouped up, 10 rnds @ 100 yds. 2-3" without even trying. He told me, it's a rare factory rifle. He's quite the " bullshiter" so at first, I did'nt beleive him. Then he showed me a marking on the front of the magwell that designates this rifle, factory built. I intend to do more digging, before I trade off my FAL, but everything looks "kosher". Thanks for your responses, and welder79, good luck on your build. Keep us posted.

On the front of the magwell, if it's a real Armalite, shoud be a white imprint of like an eagle or something; didn't dig my gun out for this response, but it's in a square, almost looks like a WWII german marking, and is contained in a white square. If you look at the website, you can get a glimpse of the marking; not that it couldn't be duplicated, but.....(my gun has it). Good luck. Westex over.

Westex, Thats cool, The first thing I thought of when I saw the marking was; Wow, a Nazi Armalite. It looks cool, I love that marking. You were hitting Grapefruit at 400 yds? THAT'S INCREDIBLE! What ammo were you using? I'll try some of that. My brother and I only use, military surplus .308. Not because it's special, it's just that we're cheapskates. However, I'd be willing to try something else. I'll bet that scope, set you back,a bit. But that is some great shooting. Westex, how long is the barrel on your AR-10?
