Hey Folks,
I just purchased a Romanian/Cugir AK-74 or Romak-2(whatever) from J&G sales. It chambers the 5.45 x 39 cartridge. I would like some feedback on steel vs. bakelite 30 rd. mags. Are the steel mags superior to the polymer mags? Does anyone know where 30 rd. mags can be purchased? It seems that the polymer mags are plentiful, but not the steel. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!
Happy New Year!

Welcome,
I have had a Romak II and going to have one again soon it is a good rifle and a good round. I would go with the bakaelite for one they are lighter and cheaper they are just as good in my opinion. Buy abuch at $5 ea you can buy a truck load. OUT.

I immediately bought 8 bakelite mags after I got my SAR-2. For the price you could afford to break a few of them a year. Though I have never broke one........maybe we need a torture test for 5.45 mags.

In addition to them being cheap and plentiful, they are rust resistent, as the only medal is the spring and baseplate. The Bulgarian poly mags are even better. They cost approx 13-14 dollars each for the 30rd's from Progressive or KVAR. They lock up tight and are real strong.

I cant stress this enough as get variety! Given the going cost I would buy mostly bakelites as they are cheap, work fine, and are great for long term storage then top off your selection with a few of the Bulgarian polymers and a half dozen steel mags! Remember more mags is good and I would get no less than a dozen (6 rotated, 6 in reserve) at current prices and maybe more if you just stick to bakelites.
Goodluck!

were do you guys find all these cheap mags at? Up here in WA. Steel goes for 25 to 30$(or atleast where I have been looking!) and I cant even find polymere's for less than 20$
I only have 6(STEEL)and want more magazines. Is it the same for 7.62? Thanks Lenny

Even if they shipped them by pack mule, it'd be cheaper than what you're paying.
My local guy was telling me that his $18 price for steel Bulgies was the best around. I guess he thinks I can't go online and get the same durned thing at Classic or others above for 7-10 each. I should be selling HIM mags.
The 4 bakelite mags I bought with my first 5.45 have 1500+ rounds through them with no affect that I can tell except some spots where they rubbed putting them in/out of my rifles. They should last forever as there is a steel insert where the rub spots are.

I purchased the bakelite mags from CDNN investments for 4.99 a piece for the used ones. I have had no problems whatsoever with them in my SAR 2.
