Received my cut away mags from Global Trades on 6/16. Inspection of the mags reveal that they are refinished mags. The followers showed deep groves worn on the hump with slight rust on the inside. I replaced both followers with a couple of spare E. German ones that I had laying around that fit perfect. Closer inspection reveals that the cut away on the side is not a factory stamped job, but something probably done in the field. The cut out looks a little rough but serviceable. Both mag springs were in great condition with no rust visible. Mags loaded and fed fine with 30 rounds of S&B FMJ ammo. IMHO, the mags are a novelty that I would not know if they have any collector value due to the no factory look of the cut away. It would appear that the same results can be had with a dremel on any standard AK mag.

Good pics. Thanks for telling about the mags. I have been thinking about ordering some but I wasn't sure if I really wanted them. I think I'll order one.

What's the benefit to a cut out mag? Seems it would allow all manner of trash and muck into the mag.
Am I missing something?

Your right DK, as both we and the French discovered with the awful Chautchat M1915 machine gun in WWI, open mags don't work too well. I think these mags were supposed to be used as training magazines, to allow the soldiers and their instructors to see how many rounds the recruit had left in his rifle.

These mags were advertised as Bulgarian training mags from Jimmy at Global trades. This explains the cut outs and rough followers. I would not advocate these as duty type mags in anyway.

I used to own a Cahutchat...crude beyond belief...one of the few guns I have actually thrown away. It beat cleaning the cosmoline off it...probably worth something today but not worth storing all that time.

I do not think Global Trades had many, but you can call them at (713) 944-3351 to find out.
