Will Galil .223 mags work in .223 Valmet rifles? If so, I may need to get me one! http://www.ak47forums.com/smile.gif

DK, Galil mags will work in the Valmet 223 rifles, scarf up any that you see, even Orlite Galil mags.

Hey, you need to be VERY careful here!!
It is my understanding that SOMETIMES, Galil magazines will not position the round at the proper feeding angle. This results in projectiles being compressed into the case. This then results in a high pressure situation when the rifle is fired.
This question has been posted on Bowers' Board and on Sturmgewehr. It usually gets both answers, but I'd proceed cautiously if I were you.
Some guy named Tromix, or something like that, is modifying StG940 magazines to fit the Valmet. I'll see if I can't find his contact information.
Hope this helps and please don't be upset with me.

Well, the last Valmet M76 5.56 that I had I did use Galil mags with no problem, but I can see where Yog is coming from. Proceed with caution, but bear in mind, you can probably remedy the situation if there is a problem.

Friends,
Here is the text of a post I e-mailed to myself about Valmet magazine conversions. I have no personal experience with Mr. Tromix, but I've heard good things about him. Contact him or visit the website if you'd like to know more.
Best of luck to all!

Valmet 76 .308 20rd Mags Coming Shortly

I have finished one prototype Valmet 76 .308 mag, converted from a 20rd FAL and it works well. I am going to cut five more pre-production units and get them out to be tested in five other Valmet 76's. If all goes well they will be available shortly thereafter. The final price has not been determined as of yet, since rate tooling still needs to be put together to speed up the process. I am guessing they will be somewhere around $69 each and the mags will be Teflon coated.
If you have a 76 .308 and are interested in some mags, please E-mail me to get on the list so I can run enough quantity in the first batch to satisfy all. Going back and running small quantities kills me. No deposit is necessary, I don't need that kind of bad press.......
If you would like to see a sample of the earlier Tromix Valmet .223 mag, you can view them on the Tromix website at tromix.com There have been over 200 of the .223 version sold with no complaints.

Heck Yog, a 223 Valmet will do the same thing with a Valmet mag. Crimped bullets loaded at the proper depth or NEW only ball ammunition is the way out of that problem.
In nearly ANY magazine fed weapon the magazine is the weak link, the most common cause of magazine problems is poor ammunition quality.

Mike

Mike,
Well, my Galils do not shove projectiles into the case. Never!! And if they did, I would analyze the problem.
I agree with you: Magazines are the first thing to examine when problems develop in semi-autos.
And, bent magazine lips/damaged magazines and bad ammo are the first place to look at for magazine problems.
As for ammo, my weapons are expensive and valuable to me. I ONLY use factory ammo. Military ball is "relatively inexpensive" when purchased in bulk.
Semi-automatic military weapons and my personal safety/well being are not "relatively inexpensive".
I'm not trying to argue, just clarify. Sorry for any confusion.

YOG is correct! Period!!!There was testing done by Tony and Small Arms Review editor on the fit and function of the Valmet Mag, GALIL Mag, and chinese mags. The following was discovered that on ocassion the GALIL mags caused the round to be seated back into the case and also the mags fit was very loose to the point the editor would not use the mag. If you go to the VALMET WEAPONS CLUB at YAHOO.COM and preview the message there you will find all the info and testing done on this mag. Bottom line do not use the GALIL MAG in the Valmet M76 223. If you do you are taking a chance with your Rifle and your Personal well being IMHO.

Thanks for the heads-up Yog and Ranger XT. Don't need anyone damaging expensive rifles or themselves. Like I said, the last M76 5.56 that I had, I used some Galil mags, and didn't have any problems, but knowing what i do now, I wouldn't do it.
I have heard nothing but good things about those conversions that Tromix is doing. They might be a tad expensive, but from what I hear, they're worth it.
AK and FAL shooters are "spoiled" with a multitude of cheap mags. I learned a long time ago with Galils and BM-59's and HK's that if you drive a Porche, you have to pay for the accessories...
