View Full Version : AK-74 type compensator exit port specs
I have owned a number of AK-74 type compensators over the years and have measured the exit port (the last hole the bullet travels through) on them with a set of calipers. These measurements are close but you mileage may vary.
East German .320”
Romanian .320”
U.S. made copy of Bulgarian sold by Global .344”
Standard US copy threaded 14/1 .371”
AA-Okay set screw type .387”
------------------
So pretty much they can be used on any AK with out worrying about the bullet blowing it off or shaving the bullets jacket.
------------------
I would say that .320 is to small for a 7.62.
------------------
No it's not. 7.62 as in 7.62X51(also known as 7.62nato or .308 winchester) is .308 in diameter. The 7.62X39 is .310-.312 in diameter(on russian bullets US 7.62X39 ammo uses .308 bullets(atleast all the 7.62X39 I have used commercially made here in US). Should be enough clearance for the bullet to go through with out hitting the brake.
I think it should work.
------------------
It is generally accepted that on a 2-2.5” comp that the exit port should be about .040 over bullet diameter. The shorter the comp the smaller the port can be. You will notice that the AK-74 is longer then 2.5”. Note also that the original compenstors for the AK-74 the compensators exit port is more then .040” greater then bullet size.
------------------
Ok. I wasn't sure how much bigger it should be.
It seemed like it might work but I wasn't sure.
