I've pretty much decided on the SAR series for my first AK to occupy an empty spot in my safe next to my black rifles. I found my way to this forum in my endless quest to make the most informed decision possible. What type of ammo pricing premium can I expect to find if I choose the SAR-2, how about availability? Finally I am choosing it over the Maadi based on the fact that it seems like it would need less work out of the box-a desireable trait in my first AK-probably not as important down the road when I get another. Finally does Federal Arms have a web site? I'm trying to find a good place to buy.

Well, i think you'll be happy either way, but the price and availability of ammo is a factor you should consider.

There are no US commercial loads for 5.45, and I don't see any manufacturer ponying up to start producing it...just isn't economically viable for them right now.

The cheapest that I've seen 5.45 at is $135.00 per case, compared to around $80.00 or $90.00 a case for 7.62x39mm, which several domestic manufacturers DO produce. If there is an import ban or restriction, 5.45 will be hard to get.

The little 5.45 is a neat round, and I like it a lot, but be sure to buy in case quantities if you decide to go there.

Mags will run you around $10 to $12 for surplus AK-47/AKM mags, and I've seen 5.45 AK-74 mags as cheap as $6.00.

Federal doesn't have a web site, but AIM Surplus does, and they will hand pick a rifle for you if you ask them too...no canted sights,, matching stock..etc. I've had nothing but good luck from those people.

Hope that helps a little.

Start with SAR-1, get a 2 later, Ammo and mags for the SAR-1 can be reasonably found. 1000 rds of 7.62 for about $100, mags at 12-15 bucks each. sar-2 is an odd caliber now mags the cheapest because of that $6.95 at INTERORDCO, ammo around $150. Guns about the same you can also try, Federal Arms Co,
7928 University Ave, Fridley MN 55432
763-780-8780 or 763-780-5747, I belive they have the rifles for $289 ea add $8.00 shipping. I have had nothing but good guns and acessories from them and excellent service, on my SAR-2 in May I sent snail mail an FFL and Visa card # and recieved my rifle at my FFL 7 days later, now that the FFL is on file, I could just phone in an order for quicker service...let us know what you decide to do and good luck.

You would not go wrong with either rifle.

I recommend that every one start with a 7.62 and then graduate to a "micro caliber" later if you need to. You will know when it is time.

Does anyone have any experience with JG sales in AZ? They are a shotgun news advertiser and seem to be the best option if I want to physically see the rifle before I buy it. Incidentally SAR-1 or SAR-2 $299.

Still haven't decided between calibers but I;m heading up to J&G tomorrow so I'll let you know what I decided. Thanks again for your help-I'm looking forward to joining the fraternity of AK fans. How could I not have one in my safe?

If you don't already have a 47, get the SAR1 to start with. You can get the SAR2 later, but the availability of the 7.62 parts and accessories would warrant the 47. Stuff is everywhere for the SAR1. cya

Just bought a SAR-1 just because I like the looks of it, and for the price you just can't go wrong. 7.62X39 can be found almost anywhere. Its a nice shooter too.Highly recomend the SAR-1.
