Well, not to count my chickens before they hatch, but I just ordered a SAR2 from Wholesale Guns (aka Burns Bros). They're holding their prices for now, so it cost me $249.99 with 2 30 round mags, one 10 round mag, and they paid shipping.
Sending it off to Informer as soon as I get it for him to put the original '74 brake on it, replace the Hesse trigger group with a double arm FSE group, and then refinish in shiny black teflon enamel over phosphate, as the originals were. I'm thinking about putting the Hungarian blond '74 stocks that Global Trades says they have on it, or the Romanian laminated wood.
If only I could find some Russian or other Eastern Euro laminated wood with the '74 lightening cuts on the stock, I'd be supra-happy!
Was seriously not thinking I could do this, the recent ATF ban on importation of barrels and receivers hit right after I sold my pre-ban Chinese rifle, and I thought I'd never get an inexpensive AK to use as a platform again, but my fiancee and I talked about it, and she told me to go ahead and do it, that it only made sense to get it now and that she understood.
Man I love her! http://www.ak47forums.com/biggrin.gif
Sorry for the rant....just felt like jumping for joy and telling somebody.
Will post pics once everything is completed.

Congrats. That is a good price for the rifle! Makes me want to buy another.
One kicker to placing a double arm trigger in, is that the SAR2 is an AKM style weapon. They are designed for the single arm. He will have to modify the receiver to make it fit, slightly, but it have to be ground on.
I would go with the Romanian laminated myself. Looks more authentic, plus it is down right good lookin'!
Have you checked with KVAR to see what they have for stock sets?
Once you get it, buy ammo, ammo and more ammo! You're gonna love it. I love mine! The only drawback to mine is that I have a slight, very slight trigger slap, it isn't even consistant only every now and then. Think I will just grind off some of the back of the hammer.
Looking forward to the pics! You've seen mine haven't you?

Thanks backblast. Yes, I have seen yours, and to be honest, that was the major impetus to do this.
I've been on K-Var's web site and seen their stock sets, and that's why I was thinking about the laminated Romanian stock set that they have.
Informer told me he'd have to modify the receiver slightly, but that's fine. He prefers the double arm FSE trigger groups and he does a trigger job while he is installing the parts, to eliminate trigger slap and get the trigger down to about 3 or 4 pounds.
My friend Panzerschreck is doing the same thing, but he'll have different furniture on it. We want to at some point put Kobra's on them and go out there and show those AR boys up at the 3 gun matches. http://www.ak47forums.com/cool.gif
Thanks again for lighting a fire under my ass backblast!

Please explain how you are going to keep your parts count legal with the Romanian comp AND Romanian stockset.
You're one USA part short by my count.

Mike

They are nice guns I would like to get one if I can in the near future as long as they dont skyrocket to a threshold I feel is more than the guns value to me. If I do I would probably replace the stock set with some sort of US laminate, and US disconnector so I could have my Romanian hammer back http://www.ak47forums.com/wink.gif. You know me I dont care much for those US trigger parts! Is the gas piston US already? Never really thought much about it? Good luck with your gun!

GREAT you got one while they were cheap. The good ole days are a ending.
This section will soon be replaced by the Krinks and the Hesse discussions. Yes I know there is a Hesse already, but not much going on there yet.

The SAR series of rifles have as USA parts:
Hammer
Disconnector
Trigger
Gas Piston
Pistol grip
That is the five required parts that keeps the import count at ten, the maximum allowed.
If you add the Romanian comp, you have 11 imported parts
Buttstock
Forend Stock
Bolt
Bolt Carrier
Receiver
Trunion
Barrel
Mag body
Mag follower
Mag floorplate
+
Compensator
=
One imported part too many.
There are no USA mag parts for 5.45 or 5.56 rifles.
Now what?

Mike

The best option if you want to use imported furniture and the Romanian brake is to make up some of CAMPYBOB's 5.45 floor plates. He will e-mail the plans to you, if you ask for them.

Thanks Ekie! I will say this once again...
Unconstitutional and Illogical laws. Enough to make someone fear their goernment.

The laws are rediculous.
And a possible Algore presidency ought to cause you feelings of outright terror.
