I got a siderail scope mount from Clearview Investments for about $39.95. It slides on from the rear and locks down nice & tight. It doesn't have a base, only 1" rings so you can still see the iron sights.

I decided to try a Tasco MiniMag 25 red dot from one of my son's 22's. It fit perfectly. It didn't take long to zero and is quite accurate and real fast getting on target. Now I just have to get another Tasco before my son notices. Most Red Dots won't work since they are wider than 1".

If you look around there are alot of red dot scopes with 1" tubes.

Most Red Dots that I've seen aren't like regular scopes. They aren't meant to take rings but have an integral base part meant to attach to the scope mount. The Tasco Mini Mag is that way. It just worked out that the piece that held this mount fit between the rings on my siderail mount. Before you pick up one check this measurement. If the scope mount you're using on your AK has a Weaver base most any Red Dot should work. The problem with a Weaver base on an AK is that it will either block the iron sights or raise the scope so high, you'll need a cheek pad.

Graf & Sons, 800-531-2666, has the Tasco red dots:

TAMM25 1x25mm MiniMag Dull Black $45.68
TAMM25ST 1x25mm MiniMag Stainless $45.68

As I said in the original post, I used this with the siderail mount from Clearview Investments where the rings are fixed in place and there is no base. Its not the most flexible system but mounts solid and leaves the iron sights visible. Using the dot & the iron sights I didn't waste much ammo getting sighted in.
