My first AK, a Romanian SAR-1 should be arriving Mon or Tues from Wholesale Guns & Ammo. I'm getting the gun,1-5 rd and 3-30 rd mags for $306 w/ shipping. Sounded like a good deal to me. Has anyone gotten a SAR-1 from them? Are all the SAR-1's from one source? What is the worst and best things about them? Also has anyone got a source for the scope mount that uses the side rail that these guns have?

Sounds like you got a good deal. All of the SAR family are made by Century but many dealers & wholesalers sell them. I have SAR-2s in 5.45 not SAR-1s but for the price I don't think you can beat them. Good: Inexpensive, factory siderail, original pistol grip configuration. Bad: Sometimes front sight/sight block is canted, QC sometimes isn't that great (all 4 SAR-2s I've handled had good sights and decent quality) and some of the US internal parts (hammer, trigger, disconnector) are poorly fitted/heat treated leading to excessive wear/trigger snap. However, if you replace the factory stock set w/a US-made stockset (like the K-Var black polymer) then you can legally replace 2 of the 3 US-made internals with original internals (like hammer and trigger for example). Personally, I don't think the AK is the best scope platform (I've tried) but Tantal has both the NIMP & MTK-75 siderail mounts if you want to use a regular scope. I would suggest you take a good look at the Kobra holosight at his website as it's made specifically for AK siderails like on your SAR. It's a red dot/t-bar style sight that really increases your speed of target acquisition & engagement. Here's his site: http://www.tantal.kalashnikov.guns.ru/

Went down to Houston today to a gun show and got a dozen E. German (not very) used mags for less than $9 each. Now if the gun gets here tomorrow like it's supposed to!

Wholesale hooked me up good on my SAR-2 last week. But I woulnt expect it so soon. They told me they shipped it on Monday and I got it on Monday. The store I had it shipped to was open Saturday so it obviously took longer than 6 days shipping. My front site was a tiny bit off but the rear site and gas block are perfect. The gun shot almost deada-on the first shot, all it needed was elevation adjustments. Then I sighted the Kobra collimator from Tantal and its fucking bad now. Just mailed off the dough for the Rom front site and comp + U.S. polymer furniture today, so in 1 week I will have one mean looking 74!!! My birthyear http://www.ak47forums.com/smile.gif Enjoy your SAR...get the 74 next.

Ned, you called that right. I have been chasing that gun thru UPS for ten days now. They say it will be delivered tomorrow. I'm not holding my breath. Their "regular driver for that section of East Texas died and the temporaries can't find the store". It's the only pawn shop in a town of 1600 at the only intersection in town! Every time I order anything gun related, UPS "loses"it for about two weeks.

Well the gun finally arrived today. Had to give UPS a LARGE piece of my mind. It seems to be well put together. The front sight is perfectly vertical (I was worried about that after reading of so many that were canted). Now I'll have to see how it shoots.

I got mine from SOG....after I paid my dealer his cut...price was $335.oo
Got a 30 rd mag and two 5 round mags, cleaning kit, sling and manual.
The frt sight post looked like (I ) way off to the left, then after a short range test fire and adjustment it looked like:
( I ) centered, boy was I happy, since I heard that some guys was having problems w/ their frt sight tower being off center.
BTW I heard that CDNN had the cobra on sale for $119.00 until 11/03.
Anyway the gun was a good buy IMHO.
Oh, as for Wholesale Guns (Burns Bros) I picked up an FN-FAL Carbine from them, fast service and a good gun for the price, I was real happy with them too.
