I posted this a while back on the "other AK" site. I hope that someone might find something in here informative.
I had an opportunity to take my new SAR-2 to the range along with my SAR-3
to do a back-to-back comparison.
I used Wolf ammo for both; 55 gr. 223 and 60 gr. 5.45. Judging from what
I have read from other posters, I expected that the 3 would display a more
distinct & pronounced recoil over the 2. In actuality, there
seemed to be little or no difference at all. If pressed to say which recoiled more
, I would say the 3, but only very slightly more. Then
again, it could have just been a placebo effect left over from my prior
misconceived anticipations of there being a recoil difference. Suffice it to say that
if there is any difference at all, it is negligable. The 3 did have a
sharper, louder report however, and the muzzle flash was definately larger
with the 3 as well.
Both functioned flawlessly throughout the session, that is as long as I
used the modifed bakelite mags in the 3. At one point, I switched to a mag
that I have not yet completely modified. The 3 began to exhibit the
normal FTF's & FTE's. Occaisonally, however, it would eject a complete
and unfired round. I am guessing that this happened as the bolt traveled
forward and simply spit the unfired round out of the ejection port rather
than feeding in into the chamber. Again, this only happened with the
un-modified mags. With the properly modified mags, the 3 was as perfect
as the 2....smoother than butter on a bald monkey.
As for the aesthetics, the 2 has a darker, more bronze colored wood than
the 3's orange shaded wood. The 2 also has an interesting spotted
grain pattern. Real interesting and attractive. It also has, like most
people's, the bent bolt handle and the ramped gas block in contrast to
the 3's straight bolt handle and 90 degree gas block.
In an effort to avoid being too lengthy, suffice it to say that they are
the favorite guns in my stable. Now as long as 5.45 stays abundant and
inexpensive, they will both get lots of excercise.
