I really liked the MP 5/10. For close combat it was accurate, 3-round burst gave good lethality, and the sites were stupid easy to use once you got used to them even in poor light. I've been trying to find something I like as well to play with as a civilian. I have looked at some of the SBR options for the AR-15. SBr in rifle calibers is out- too much muzzle flash. Low light vision is out the window with round 1 and I don't believe any flash hider is going to tame that. I haven't seen a 9mm or .45 upper that warms my heart. The .45 require a special lower, the 9mm seem to be hit or miss reliability wise. Not good in an oh-shit. What else is there in a short barreled cabine. Not necessarily Ar platform, although that would be a plus if could get a simple upper for my existing rifle, but compact, high capacity mags, 9mm or .45 preferred. Ideas?

At the moment only Uzi & a M1carbin & a Cx4 or Hi point come to mind.

Marlin lever action in 454 Casull or 45-70. Short, light weight, will take down a bear at 50 yards easy and if you miss the muzzle blast will blind him long enough for you to shoot again. Even if a booger man is wearing body armor you could puncture his lung with the broken ribs. 30-30 is good too and cheaper.

My opinion, and there are many that will probably disagree with me, if you are going to have a shoulder fired weapon, use a rifle caliber. Only exception would be the 5.7mm. I am not a big fan of the pistol caliber carbine and I am issued a UMP40. Also issued an M4 and choose proper one for the Op at hand. The pistol caliber carbine has some advantage over the pistol but no advantage over the rifle caliber carbine. Some would say the rifle caliber would be prone to overpenetration. OK... use frangible ammo. When you need the extra punch, switch to regular. Hard to do that with the pistol caliber. If you are only going to have one, get a rifle caliber. Or.... get both!!!!!!! :naughty:

Calico 9mm carbine. Lot of firepower in a compact package. Magazine does not increase practical dimensions of weapon. Wide variety of ammunition choices.

Have you ever seem how well a Vortex tames muzzle flash in even a short barreled rifle?

Also a suppressor is very efficient in taming flash. In all probability it's virtually flash-less when suppressed, even an 11.5" commando barrel.

I had a 10.5 with just a vortex that was virtually flashless even loads that have flash retardant powders (like Wolf). The blast and noise was horrendous, but the flash wasn't an issue.
I'm a firm believer that if you plan to use a short barreled rifle caliber platform, then you should consider a sound suppressor to be basic equipment. An AR is loud, but you wouldn't believe how much difference a few less inches of barrel makes, or how much better a suppressor on the same gun makes it. Your team mates will thank you for their hearing if you ever actually come to shots fired in a CQB environment.

As mentioned above, the 5.7x28 in the PS-90 for those of us who are shall not be infringed challenged is a perfect CQ weapon. The P-90 was designed for close quarters and to meet the length and number of rounds per trigger pull per the second amendment, the PS-90 is the minimum length the constitution allows at bearly 26 inches long. In fact the original P-90 is so short, that the PS-90 had to have a 2 inch flash hider added onto the minimum 16 inch barrel to get to the 26 inch length.
Not to mention having 50 rounds on tap is worth something.
Sorry about my ranting about our slightly disfigured constitution.

Why not purchase a transferable MP five and dime ?
As for a subcarbine, you have a few choices....
AR's
SIG 556 pistol (SBR'd)
Krink
HK53
SIG 552
SIG 553 ($$$$$$)
Like other's have said a vortex works great, and so do suppressors.
On suppressors though, watch your barrel length (many suppressor companies will void your warranty if your barrel is too short, especially on FA)
