the ONLY problem I've had with my DoubleStar upper kit on the CMMG lower receiver is this:

when shooting late last week I had to end early because after firing a round the gun jammed and I can visibly see the next round pressing on the back of the spent round still in the chamber. I use my cleaning rod with no end on it with the charging handle pulled back and with a couple mild hits the spent casing dis-lodges.

Wondering if something in the gun typically causes this, or if its due to cheap ammo.

So heres what I have.....DoubleStar M4 kit, standard everything internally
and heres what I'm shooting.........Silver bear 62 grain hollow points, steel casings that are supposed to be zinc plated I guess.

edit: its happened twice, both times about 150-200 rounds down. the first time I dont remember, but this last time it was during pretty rapid fire, not sure if that helps or not.

This is known as a failure to extract (FTX). Most often caused by a rough chamber, or possibly a very dirty chamber, and can be exacerbated by hot loads, short barrels, and/or softer than normal brass.

First remedy is to clean the chamber really well. This was especially a problem with older wolf and some other loads with visible lacquer sealant around the case neck. The lacquer would flake off at the throat, stick around and melt into the next round, making it hard to extract.

Next remedy is extra-power extractor spring and/or d-fender ring or other polymer extractor helper insert. This often cures poor extraction on shorties where the problem is you're pulling against some residual chamber pressure. Extreme cases can result in the extractor ripping the rim off the case or snapping the hook off the extractor. Rim off the case is more likely since brass is softer than steel.

If those fixes don't help, you can consider polishing the chamber, or at least having a cast made to check for a rough chamber. On a non-chrome-lined barrel, the chamber can be finish-reamed by a gunsmith if it's too rough, and it can also be polished by anyone with an electric drill, some valve grinding grit, and a chamber mop attached to a cleaning rod.

my gun has a chrome lined chamber and bore....so I'm guessing it shouldnt be too rough???
I'm shooting Silver Bear ammo that is steel cased and zinc plated with no lacquer to my knowledge.

I went through and cleaned the bore and chamber really well last night and a good amount of black residue came out.

I talked to two gun shops.....both said to run a lil better ammo, one sayin it was lacquer coated and that was the cause, the other said it was cheap ammo and running brass would be a good idea. The shop who recommended brass as an upgrade said he hadn't heard any issue with Silver Bear ammo, and mentioned he d-fender ring I believe...was hard to understand it when he said it over the phone, but he said it should help and is only charging like $20 for the part and to put it in for me.

I'll give that a shot before I sell off the 800 rounds or so of ammo I have left and spend a bunch more on brass cased ammo. I really loved the price I got on the Silver Bear ammo and have funds set aside to buy alot more at the next gun show November 1st...if this doesn't work I'll spend the extra and just deal with less brass cased ammo I guess.

got the defender ring in today at the gun shop......if I would have known it was that easy I would have done it myself, but he didnt charge me any labor, cleaned my gun up a lil inside and around the extractor a good amount, showed me a few tricks on maintaining the gun, met my 22 day old son, gave him a gold "president" dollar, and gave my son his first gun....a keychain sized Glock! haha

VERY impressed and very happy with The Armory in Kearney, Missouri!!!! $21 with tax, out the door in under an hour, and with a smile on my face.....who could ask for more?

the extractor showed "a little wear" but nothing too bad....so hopefully this will eliminate the problems!

having a newborn is NOT helpful in trying to see if that lil ring and a good cleaning made the difference or not!!!
Oh well, in the meantime, ordered an AK and 740 rounds of ammo.....so I can shoot it if another empty gets stuck. I didnt get it to replace my M4 by any means.....just that I love guns and dont like choosing between which I side with.
