Which saiga?
The 7.62X39 I have after removing the gas tube and loosening the sling swivle just spread the plastic handguard by hand and pull foreward.
The .308 I have has a screw on the bottom at the reciever you have to remove.

i figured it out

the gas tube is on there TIGHT, i had to pry it loose and up to get it out, and actually had to tap it back into place when i was done, the handguard came off easy after the tube was out

this was on a 7.62 saiga, there wasnt a bottom screw on the handguard except the swivel sling screw

thanks for the help -- how does that 308 shoot? accuracy and reliablity and recoil?

The .308's trigger swings up, instead of straight back (not a big deal, I got used to it). The muzzle climb is bad for me whenever I'm not using a bipod (I'm a wimp http://www.ak47forums.com/smile.gif ), thinking of getting a muzzle brake to help. As far as accuracy, I've gotten decent groups with the PSO-1 it came with, but I think I can do better with a crosshair type reticle. Reliable as an AK.

On my .308 saiga I can get groups just over 1" at 100 yards. To me it's more accurate than my romak3. The best I can get it is 2" groups at 100 yards. For both rifles I'm using the scopes they came with. I like the scopes the reticle takes some getting used to especially the first time I used it.

Recoil to me is not much more than 7.62X39 AK. The recoil is about the same as a M1 garand(not sure if you have shot one of them). But it has alot more muzzle climb than the 7.62X39 even compared to the 7.62X39 saiga.

I have both calibers in the saiga and I like the wood look on the .308 better.

oh yeah ive shot the garand, with and without a muzzle break, and had my own version of m1 thumb -- what i call M1 index, i almost got my index finger slammed, got it out in the nick of time with some scratches on my fingernail --TOOO CLOSE -- lol
the smith break works great on a garand

good to hear the 308 saiga is a decent gun, ive shot the PSO-1 scope on a romak, 2 inch groups is about normal with cheapy ammo
maybe swap out the PSO scope for the MTK russian mount and add a better higher quality scope, the cross hair on the PSO is a popular euro style, some dont even have the crosshair and just a post, maybe not the best but kinda neat looking

i thought about having mike@MSC cut down the barrel on a 308 and make it a carbine/brush gun, i think they would be kinda neat if you dont mind the muzzle blast

Yeah, it'd make a good bush gun (should be great for hog hunting), I was thinking of trying an ArmaLite brake or an AK-74 brake like Mike has on the Yugo AK's. I hate that muzzle climb when I'm standing.

Yeah I hate when that happens with the M1. It hurts and can make a big mess(from blood splattering).

I use pretty much cheap ammo in both my romak3 and the .308 saiga.

To me the 2" group isnt too bad for it. But I would like to get some better ammo and see if I can improve on it.

I actually like the russian scopes that came with the 2 rifles. Only thing is I with the saiga had the illuminated reticle. But its a pretty nice scope.

You want to see scopes and muzzle brakes you should see the ones on my Ruger 10/22. I have a heavy match fluted stainless steel barrel with compensator(like it needs it) and a 4-12X40 Bushnell scope. At the local range I can get 10 rounds inside a circle the size of a quarter at 100 yards. That was a rifle I got and built to play with. The reciever is the only part thats Ruger. The bolt body is ruger but the extractor and firing pin are both titanium replace ments.
