Welcome wedgehead30! As far as a new sight system for the AK, I don't know of any peep sights out there except for the Galil and Valmet dustcover mounted ones.

Classic Arms has RPK adjustable rear sights for $15.00 right now. They allow you to adjust for windage with the rear sight. www.classicarms.org (http://www.classicarms.org)

You might also want to consider puttting optics on your Maadi. Tantal has scope base plates that fit ont he left side of the AK like the Romanians put on the WUM 1 and SAR series. Then you can put a nice holograhic sight on it like the military issue Kobra. Click on the "Related Sites" forum for his web site.

Again, welcome. FNG's are always welcome.

About these RPK sites, are they peep-hole? I would like to try a peep-hole site on my AK's. Tapco used to have them. I guess that they don't anymore.

Okay, Merle. That review effectively talked me out of the Williams site when it said that it is knocked off of zero very easily.
Now, the question is, is the RPK site a peep-hole site?

The RPK sight is just like your standard sight except that the rear notch is adjustable for windage. What caliber is your AK, 7.62, 5.45 or .223? I believe the RPK sights that are for sale are for the 7.62x39 round. If you have one of the other rounds the elevations clicks will be off.

I put an RPK sight on my .223 SAR-3 & am very pleased with it. Previous post is undoubtably right about sight not being indexed for .223 trajectory - but I don't fuss with that anyway. I just zero gun in & leave it.

this thread got me to thinking: would there be a market for a quality iron ring/ghost rear sight? How about a dustcover with rear ghost ring sight that actually stays firmly on the receiver? wel, guys -- what do you think?

Rick P, I think a new sight would be welcome, AK guys are not real picky, but some things could be better, like the old iron site. Would want it to be pretty rugged and easy to set, and than be able to stay on zero. For some reason the cover site mounts have not worked to well, maybe the cover moves or does not go on the same every time. Let us know if you come up with something, I would be interested.

I've seen posts both here and at the other AK site inquiring about peep sights for AK's, generally looking for something like the set up on a Galil. Looks like there's a market to me: I know that I'd immediately buy one that works. Peep sights not only are generally better than open sights, but for those of us with middle-aged eyes they're MUCH better.

Working for a small arms developer, I can't tell you enough guys, how frustrating it is to hear these "thumbs up" for various ideas that pop into my head, only to know deep inside that there's just only so much you can chew on at one time. I'd love to convince my folks to gin up something like this -- and it's certainly not rocket science. I'll certainly pass your comments on. Maybe we could get it done off shore.

I've been messing around with mounting a HK-G3 sight on a AK dust cover. The G3 sight is kinda tall so the sight will have to mount at the back of the dust cover. I picked up some square tube the other day at the hardware store that I'm gonna make a mounting base from. I'm gonna pop rivet the base to the end of the dust cover. For windage adjustment gonna use a AR-15A2 rear windage screw and knob. I still need to pick up a spare dust over as I don't want to modify my orginal. If and when I get this done I'll post some pics.

I e-mailed TAPCO recently and found that they did have these in stock. Check out this link. http://www.ak-47.net/ak47/sights/tapco.html
This could be the answer.
