I'd like to keep iron sights as backup, thinking of mounting a low power or red dot type scope, would rather not make any permenant changes to the receiver.

Well, your options are limited if you don't want to mod the reciever. No sides rails for you! hehe.
There is a gas tube mount being sold out there, it replaces your gas tube, and gives you a flat weaver base to mount pistol or red dot sites.

Sigh - go to Tantal's site & get the MTK-75 set up. Use a 3x9x32 scope (I like the Bushnells). Yes, you WILL need to drill two holes in your receiver. I did mine a week ago. Measure it, re-measure it, then DO it. I have only a hand drill and a secret - Cobalt bits. Get them at Sears. They will go RIGHT through the milled receiver.
If you want a GOOD scope setup? This is the only way to go.

Thanks for the input, I DO want a GOOD solid mount, so in spite of my reluctance to drill I may end up doing just that.
unless anyone else has any other input....

I understand how you feel - the first one of these that I did? I was scared as hell :) Tantal was kind and encouraging - and he was right... it turned out to be easy. I've drilled FOUR AKs now :) And the mounts are GREAT. Here are a couple of SSR-85's - both equiped with side mounts...
