Hey guys, I saw a Mauser 98k today and was wondering if it is a good buy. Its marked "byf 44", eagles and swastikas intact, no import markings, finish i'd say 90%, stock in very good condition. The only thing I could see wrong with it was none of the numbers matched. The guy was asking $395 but will take $350. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Hello, I am not too sure about that type of Mauser. Schetzenman or REDSTAR would be the ones to ask. Hope this helps. 8dDUCE.

1. I would buy it. You dont have to guess what it is, you know, if the stamps are authentic and barrel looks good. Go for it. :D

Interordnance sells matching numbers for about a grand so I'd say $350 isn't a bad deal with the markings intact, especially in the condition you described.
I think I/O also sells good condition K98's with markings and non matching for about $500.
Check out their site to see the exact prices www.interordnance.com

Sounds good to me........get it if someone hasn't beat you to it. Besides you will be the envy of all your friends.

It does sound good. By numbers don't match I assume you are referring to the bolt SR # not matching the receiver. However, do you know what the headspace checks? Thinking about it if the markings are intact all over and even if the head space was gross it might still be worth getting. One can always search for a bigger bolt to take up excess headspace.
Waffenampts, the little eagle marking, should be all over the rifle. Follower should have one, bolt should too, under the rear sight, on the slider of the sight, on the receiver, barrel, etc. Unfortunately, I can't tell you for sure how many.

I have an S/243 1937 K98. It doesn't completely match bu t it has all of the waffenampts. I paid 155.00 with the bayonet. It does however have "GERMANY" stamped on the end of the barrel. I've never known how much it is worth. The bore is bright and crispy as well.

It's an import as revealed by the "GERMANY" thing. But all that said I can't see it being worth less than $350. Matching number and no import marks easily $600. A mint capture rifle matching numbers and all complete could well fetch $1K in the collector market. Too rich for my taste though at that kind of price.

Well, I bought it today. My first 98k and I'm very satisfied with it. Thanks for all the input. Now if I can just keep it from fighting with the Mosin......

The byf Waffenamt is the code for the old DWM, isn't it? If it is, you should have a very nice piece.
Be seeing you.
The byf code is Mauser Oberndorf.
