M-1 Garand disassembly question

Is there a way to remove the handguard clips with out damaging them or buying the $25 tool from Fulton Armory?

if its anything like a 1903, you should be able to push in the little metal strips behind the clips, and then slide the clips down the wood.

the tool is the best way, go to sears or home depot and buy the snap ring tool or what ever its called, they can come with different size tips and can be reversed to either open up or close a ring or clip.
