what's the best way to remove the wood from the upper handguard? is it just like a AK upper?

There's a pin on the rear you have to punch out, then it will twist off like an AK upper.

the rear metal piece has a small pin that holds it in, knock that out and it will come apart. i reuse the same pin.

looks like I'm going to have to take it to work and use a good vice on it :(

That looks like the pin to me.....At least the one I punched out..:D
If you have three hands,a flat surface,hammer and punch or screwdriver you should have no problem whatsoever driving it out.
