WTF!
Who pays $20 bones for a box of Makarov! Hell even the S&B reloadable isn't that much! Plenty of NCorrosive Russian mfg. 9X18 for about $6 at every Gun Show I do here in NC. 54R try AIM they have some Czech silver tipped light ball that is supposed to be corrosive and fairly accurate for surplus. I have some but have yet to try any of it.
Average price for a 440 round can of 54R at shows is $50 plus tax. I sell them for $50 tax included. Don't have any cans, just the Czech in the 20 round boxes. See AIM for a sealed crate of it. It's a cool crate, a keeper after the ammo is gone. Nice flip up handles on the side and a closing latch in the front. Ammo is sealed in a steel can solderd shut with 3 pull tabs to openit.

I believe AIM is currently out of it. I e-mailed them about something else last week and asked them about the 54R. They said that they thought they would be getting a shipment in about a month.
Edited to say that I saw some on J & G Sales website. They have 440 rd cans for 49.95. Go to: http://www.shooterstore.com/acb/showprod.cfm?&DID=111&CATID=607&ObjectGroup_ID=1655

Centerfire Systems has new production 7.62 x 54R for $59.95 for 500 rounds.
And when possible I always get my ammo from Century becuase their prices include shipping. They should have those calibers.
Tennessee guns lists 7.62x54R on thier web site for around $40 for a 440rd tin. AIM usually has lots of 54R floating around. www.ammunitionstore.com has 54R for $50 for a 440rd tin. Hope this helps.

Oh, I forgot to mention AIM also has several types of Eropean and Russian made 9X18 ammo including the Silver Bear HP's. Check them out at www.aimsurplus.com .

I've had great luck with the Polish 9x18 from AIM surplus. They had it on sale recently, and it's still pretty cheap. It's super accurate and really clean.

Shawn, what did you think of that "sniper grade" 7.62x54R from AIM? I seem to recall a thread where you said you got some.
I purchased some of the sniper grade ammo as well. It was good ammo but considering the price it wasn't worth it.

It was the most fantastic shit i've put through my M39 ever. I was shooting 1MOA with it, and i swear the crap was loaded to shoot through my rifle. It would hit EXACTLY where i was pointing my rifle. If you can get some, do it. Unfortunatelly the day after i tried my ammo, i called AIM, and they were sold out. :(
I'm saving what i have left. (160 rounds... i shot 80 the day i was testing it)
Poop. Let me know if you ever see any of that stuff anywhere else!

Led, if you have any left and are selling, I'm buying.
Thanks-
Shawn
I still have two boxes. I'll have to ponder selling it. Number_6 has some as well, you might want to check with him. How much would you offer for a box??

Note about the silver tip that AIM has: It is very accurate and does have a cool box, but I had to slam the bolt of my M44 3 times to open it after every shot. Others apparently have had the same problem. Hopefully the 91/30 will like it - gives me incentive to have it ready for this weekend.
BTW, I'm in the same boat now, looking for ammo for the M44 before this weekend :(

Homer is it the ammo or the rifles headspace?
I just ordered a go and a no go gauge made by Clymer to check my 7.62X54R's.
I have a case of the Czech silver tip and have had no problems in my M-44's. In fact, the Czech stuff is my favorite surplus ammo. It shoots great and is real accurate.

Here's a couple links that might help with an idea or two:

Clear,
Thanks, just in the nick of time as I was afraid about too much headspace on my 91/30 before I shoot it. I'll use your links. Probably just order a gauge like you did.
THANKS!!!!!!!

Homer it sounds more like you have a rough chamber than a headspace issue. The case would grab onto any rough spots and it would be hard to open the bolt. Let's face it the M44's don't have the longest most ergonomic bolt handles, so you really don't have a lot of leverage there.

Schuetz,
That would make sense. This is one of those wrapped M44s and it is in incredible shape. Could it be a manufacturing 'defect' so that corrosion or wear isn't the issue, but the chamber wasn't quite milled out enough?
What is the cure for a rough chamber? I am guessing, find the rough spot(s), sand, file or otherwise smooth problem areas... I guess blue would be destroyed if I did this.
I just ordered some 1987 Russian surplus. I'll see if that works in the M44. It is 44.95 + shipping from shooterz.com. The woman was nice, shipping to my zip was $15 (little high, but ammo's heavy as we all know).
Also, the link to gauges did not include a gauge for the 7.62X54r...

Homer,
The most likely cause for a rough chamber in your rifle's case would be chatter marks or drag marks from the reamer being dull or run at too high a speed when cutting the chamber. Fixing a rough chamber is a bitch if not impossible. Very difficult to knock off the high points and not make the low spots deeper.
I remember my boss (former boss from my first full time job after college in a rifle barrel company) trying to put a chamber in a .308 barrel. He screwed up and ran the lathe too fast to start with and the reamer chattered. Made a spiral fluted chamber! After that no matter what he did and how careful he was, when the reamer went in it picked up the pattern and just made it deeper. He finally had to cut off the threaded end of the barrel blank, turn and rethread the shank to dimensions and then go back in with the reamer again. This time no problem.
BTW gents, I worked for 18 months in a rifle barrel company between 82 and 83. I knows my rifle bores! ;) LOL!

In that case, I pray to the good Lord that the Russian ammo works in it cause this M44 is absolutely gorgeous and accurate as hell (read 'M44 range report'). My palm is still sore from Saturday's shooting, slamming the bolt 80 times.

I hope the other ammo will work for you too! But if it doesn't you may want to investigate a cheater pipe to use as a bolt opener. Piece of galvinized steel pipe that can slip over the bolt knob to give a longer moment arm for leverage.

I may try this myself it I can't get one of my 91/30's to quit sticking. I read posts to the effect that you can wrap a bore brush in steel wool, chuck it into a drill motor and using some oil and low RPM, polish the chamber of the problem rifle. Might be worth a try particularly if the problem is dried cosmoline or some such.
