View Full Version : East coast shoot

OK, lets start planning this stuff now. Last year we tried and never could put it together. Don't want to fail again this year. With all of the boards being combined we should be able to put together a "meet and shoot" at a range or on someones private property in a gun friendly state.

Anyone interested sign up here and lets start working out the details.

Count me in. I have some land here in Virginia we can shoot on. We also have some good hotels in the area and lots of good places to eat.

I'm more than willing to travel to Virginia. It may be just us two.

There are several people from Virginia here...and I'm sure many from neighboring states. Virginia is a suggestion. I am more than willing to travel for a weekend somewhere else. Anybody here from the Outer Banks area that has a good place to shoot? That's about as beautiful an area as you can pick. Would mean more travel for the inland crowd but it's really worth it and anybody with kids would be doing them a great service.

wkinma

It's a do-able ride for me, and there are others in the area.

Try the idea on a couple of the other forums.

Virginia?

HECK YES.

Great country too. (double entendre':p )

I'm in the outer banks area... but I have nowhere to shoot except the local range and I would not .... well... I won't demean it... it is what I have.

Zoff12
01-16-2002, 06:35 PM
I'd opt for Virginia. We have a farm to shoot on and Hotels and good eats.

where and when?
we plan to go to the outer banks this summer sometime in july or august. could stop off in VA either on the way down or up. have several playthings and would bring some of the best hot dogs known to modern man!!!

Zoff12

VA or NC...either is fine with me. Will be in OBX in July for Vacation and October for the Seafood Festival. Let's try and set a date for something.

OK...seems Virginia is the place of choice. Am I wrong? If not, let's set a date...

That will work for me. I guess the time will be the next decision.

DeputyVaughn
02-17-2002, 12:13 AM
I definitely like the idea of doing it in the spring. March is out though. We just lost a deputy and I will be pulling several of those killer double shift weekends. April or may sounds good though.

VA is outstanding. I know of at least two, possibly 5-8 more people in the area that would be up for a shoot. We could caravan it out from Richmond.

zoff, if you have private land, that would probably be the best choice.......trying to get a large group of guys with evil black guns on a public range tends to turn a few heads and makes for a crowded range.

Let me know how this pans out!

Zoff12
02-18-2002, 02:12 AM
Yeah, I have access to private land that my parents own. They have no problem with letting us use it. I go there and shoot quite often. My Dad may even join us although he is a bolt action man. Probably would be OK to camp for those who would like to. For those who would rather not, there are a few good hotels in town that are great. I'll post the phone numbers of those hotels at a later date.

Still not sure of the dates yet but I'll get them in a day or two. Trying to narrow the boss down on the schedule.

Templar...Richmond, huh? I have to go there next week to the state lab to pick up an anthrax hoax letter to try and charge someone. Not too far from Altavista.

Newbie from TN here. i have a farm in virginia that i shoot at, BUT
as i understand VA state law it is illegal for non-residents to transport a firearm capable of accepting a magazine over 10 rounds. I could be wrong (and would be happy if i was)but it needs to be checked out before we go caravaning through the
OLD DOMINION!

Richard Simmons
02-20-2002, 03:30 PM
Zoff12, Mountain Survivor told me you and he had talked about a shoot. I'd be more than happy to attend. Let me know if I can help in any way.

Zoff12

Never heard of such a law but I will check with the State Police to confirm.

Yeah, I talked with Mt. about a shoot. Looking forward to the shoot and meeting you guys.

FROM THE NRA-ILA WEBSITE: "A NON-CITIZEN(STATE?FEDERAL?)
OR ALIEN NOT ADMITTED FOR PERMANENT RESIDENCE SHALL NOT
POSSESS OR TRANSPORT AN ASSAULT FIREARM, AND A GUN DEALER SHALL NOT TRANSFER IT TO SUCH A PERSON. IN THIS CASE SHOTGUNS ARE NOT INCLUDED IN THE TERM ASSAULT FIREARM.

ASSAULT FIREARM MEANS ANY SEMI-AUTOMATIC CENTERFIRE
EQUIPPED WITH A MAGAZINE WHICH WILL HOLD MORE THAN TWENTY ROUNDS OR DESIGNED BY THE MANUFACTUER TO
ACCOMODATE A SILENCER OR EQUIPPED WITH A FOLDING STOCK.

I'LL SHOW UP TO SHOOT ANYWAY, BUT PEOPLE COMING IN THROUGH THE MORE CIVILLIZED PART OF THE STATE(i.e northern,
eastern,VA)should be careful.
sorry if i pissed on your parade.

when and where guys? and can a bolt action guy shoot too? I just love to play with them old milsurps.

templar
03-26-2002, 12:15 AM
Average coyote7, that law is for non citizens of the United States. Anyone who is a citizen is fine with what ever he wants, including Class 3.

How about late April, on a Sunday preferably..............but with enough warning I can go on a Saturday.

Zoff 12, if your family would be cool with it, and you have enough room to sustain a gathering, sounds like you might be the host.

How far out is Alta Vista?

This sounds very cool.

Zoff12
03-26-2002, 10:16 AM
Yeah, we gots the room. All we ask is pick up your trash and pick up your brass...respect the Farm.

Just one thing, probably going to have to be the first or second weekend in May before we can do this. That's my next time off on the weekends. I only get them every 5 weeks...2 in a row...yippie!

templar
03-26-2002, 10:21 AM
Second week in May definitely sounds doable.

What kind of range and backstop do you have?

Zoff12
03-26-2002, 10:26 AM
Don't have a set range. Just a big field and you shoot down into it. Behind that is the river and across the river is a mountain. Shot stuff as big as a .50BMG rifle and no problem. Nobody for several miles. This area is slim for shooting ranges 'cause everybody just shoots at somebody's place.

DeputyVaughn
03-26-2002, 12:46 PM
Oddly enough I was about to suggest the first or second weekend in May. This may work out after all. I'll be able to specify which will be best for me by this time next week.

Grills are fine. I'll bring one.

Yup..that's where Altavista is. The farm is about a 10 minute drive from town but it's realtivly close. Just the roads are curvy and narrow. A little place called Grit. Anybody into country music or NASCAR? Grit is where Ricky Van Shelton(singer) and Stacy Compton (NASCAR) are from. Need to take your time. Have a tendancy to meet a tractor now and again.

Any thoughts on farm friendly targets?

Zoff12
03-29-2002, 10:03 AM
Anything not HazMat is OK to shoot. Two liter drink bottles full of water are a blast and easy to clean up. If anybody has any target stands, that would help. Just use your imagination.

DeputyVaughn

Problem!

According to my calender, the second Sunday in May is MOTHER"S DAY!!!!!! Do we men folks really want to risk this. How about either the first or third Sunday. May be safer!!!! Comment before the weekend is over. I've got to ask for the time off.

03-29-2002, 07:42 PM
Ohhhhh...head hung low! Crap! My Wife will kill me if I commit to that weekend. Sorry I missed that it was Mother's Day. Big tradition in both sides of the family of making the whole weekend a big deal. Dinner Friday night with my family. Dinner Saturday night with her family. Sunday is one of the few days that I have no excuse for not going to Church. Oh...woe is me!

Time for another date....

We may need to look further into the year. The third weekend has changed. Since I thought we were going to have the shoot on the second weekend, I committed to some extra duty that weekend.

DeputyVaughn
03-30-2002, 02:08 AM
Paul,
I had that funny feeling in my stomach when I realized what the weekend was. I didn't figure your wife wanted to have a bunch of company and "manly" type activity going on. (Nothing against any female members that intend to be at the shoot, just haven't seen any ladies sign on) Just set a favorable date and I'll adjust my plans to match it. Is the first weekend of may out???? It'd be a trick but I might could still get off. I don't want this gathering to fall apart. I'm looking forward to meeting everyone.

Scott

wkinma
03-31-2002, 01:13 AM
There are no guarantees in life ( except the death/taxes thing :) )

Mother's day could cause some people problems, so I would recommend reconsidering that particular weekend, though it probably causes me minimal difficulty.

I do want to go, and probably the earlier week would be better. However, I can't make a guarantee, only give input and let others do the same.

Scott (dba Dep. Vaughn) needs to put in for the time, very understandable, and he probably needs to do it real soon.

Nice state, I have friends a couple of hours away from where you are suggesting.

Types of firearms have not only to do with VA, but also the states you need to pass through. As a suggestion, If this indeed becomes a reality, a simple printed brochure showing the owner is registered gets one by a few states as long as the storage during transit meets their *&&%^%(* laws. Such a brochure could be something both simple and downloadable, yet be an advantageous piece of paper in the unlikely event a member needs it.

Edit: The registration form is one which shows the individual is in transit to an organized shoting event, a competition, and is like a receipt. Check NRAILA for more on this. It might take a bit of research, but rather cheap insurance and it provides a potential defense ( I'm not a lawyer) if one has a mishap on the way.

Finally, I'm skeptical of letting non-members of these forums participate without a registered member being responsible for them. We keep this board rather clean. I'd like to maintain such, as well as our reputation.

My thoughts.

Hey can I come play? Altavista is just down the road from me. I'm a FFL/SOT so I'd bring a couple of M-16's a 1919 and a bunch of suppressors.

And depending on how many people you want I'm sure if we put the word out you could have a boatload of folk’s show up. I held one last year and in a months time between AR 15 .com and Subguns we had over a 100 show. John

I've posted a link to this thread on www.servicerifles.com in the hopes of increasing fellowship and participation of all EBR owners every where. There are also a couple of my friends who don't participate on this site who are going to show up as well.

templar,
I am down around the Farmville area of VA. I maybe a newbie on this board but I am in no way a newbie to the shooting world, and I take firearms safety very seriously.

If you haven't figured it out, I got the link to this site from AR.15.com and I am member over there. I have attended some other shoots in VA with members from that board and we have always had a good time. These shoots are a good way to meet like minded individuals in our state.

If it wasn't for the hospitality of the person who put on these shoots that I have attended, I probably wouldn't of run into Oliver, who by the way is one hell of a nice fellow, and a FFL to boot. He is one of the few FFL's in the area that does transfers for folks and he doesn't try to rake you over the coals because he only charges $10 for these transfers.

I hope that this shoot can be pulled off because it would be nice to meet some fellow gunnuts ;).

Zoff12
04-01-2002, 11:34 PM
Not meaning to step on toes but for the record...

EVERYONE is welcome...so long as you show me and all the others at the shoot some respect. Someone acts up, and I don't care what board they are from...out on their ass. Of course, as many as I can fit on the farm are welcome. If you want to camp...go for it. If you want a hotel, better make reservations.

OK...nuff of that.

I am working on getting some time off in June or July. I know that's farther off than we intended but it's the best I can do.

I also want to thanks templar for being willing to support a newbie to this board.

It is because of people like you, that I am glad that I moved to VA 10yrs ago. I hope we can get together for this shoot sometime in the future. Maybe you guys can make it out to the next Richmond gunshow just to say hi.

Depending on the date its possible I'll make it. I'm one of the guys who saw it posted on AR15. But I do know a few members from this site. Met templar, Panzerschreck, farmerfromhell and a few others at a Fal shoot over a year ago. Few of them 'tested' out my 16.
