Finally.

They tried to deliver yesterday and didn't leave it. I drove 30 miles across Denver's screwed up roads to go get it during my lunch break. I didn't open it up yet but I'll post a report when I get home. I ordered that bad boy way back in October.

Sorry neilwest, I thought this was going to be your Turk. But I must say I was pleasantly surprised when I looked at the invoice.
Your Turk was probably attempted today.

I couldn't wait, I went out to my car and looked at it.

Mint condition, no dings or flaws, 100% blue, all numbers match. Get this: THE NAZI MARKINGS WERE NOT OBLITERATED. THERE'S A GERMAN EAGLE AND SWASTIKA ON THE RECEIVER!!

On the side of the receiver it is inscribed in German, which I speak fluently : Glucklich Geburtstag Reichsminister Hess, vielen gluck, AH.

'Happy Birthday Hess, much luck AH' !!

Woo-hoo! $89 from century, what a find of the CENTURY!!!

Then my boss came over and woke me up :(

Buhahahaaahaaahaahaahaaaaa!

Well, you'll be happt to know there's some significant problems:

1) It has a straight 98/22 or VZ24 bolt on it. The proofs are little Z's, I think that is Zastavsta, the Yugo arsenal. Not sure though. Do you know Shuetz?

2) The ejector is missing. That's no biggie I can pick one up for $3.

3) NO FRIKKING CLEANING ROD!

The good news is the bore is outstanding, still mirror, crisp beautiful.

Also the wood is very nice. Nice red laminate. There's some dings on the underside of the butt and some commie bastarrd carved his name but not deep.

Shuetzenman- question for you. Do you know if the internal parts of the straight handle bolt would fit onto a stripped K98 bolt body?? I'm thinking they may because those are early copies of the K98. If so I can order a bolt body for fairly cheap.

Redstar on the internals, firing pin and spring primarily, they probably will. Even if the FP is a little off for length it probably can be ground and fitted for proper protrusion length if short. If long you should be able to reshape and shorten the pin also. Just takes a little patience and going slow to try for fit and modify then retry.

Straight bolt handle . . . this sounds like it was modified by the Czech's. The stamp of the "Z" probably is Zastava which would make it Yugoslavian, but I don't have a reference source with me here to check it. Curious how a K98k eneded up with a straight bolt.

Thanks Shuetz. I have several Yugo and Czech mausers at home, I'll check the proofs on them when I get home tonight.

I called Century and they wouldn't just swap out the bolt 'for liability reasons' which I thought. They were happy to take the rifle back but I'm not willing to part with this bore. Also the metal is a strong 85%, just some wear near the muzzle. The stock number matches the receiver and magplate too.

I transfered over to my sales rep and ordered a bunch of K98 bolt parts. Didn't have the firing pin and bolt head but I was able to get about 2/3 of the bolt assembly and my missing ejector for about $20. I think I may be able to put one together now with what I have. If not, I'll order a complete bolt from Sarco. I thought this would be good experience this way.

One last thing Shuetzenman- I was wondering if when you had time you could do a post describing the headspacing gauges and make it a sticky in the info center. Like if it closes on a no go but wont close on a field it's OK kind of thing. (I'm not sure that's right- that's why I thought a post on headspace would be good).

I'm going to pick up some 8mm gauges and I need to know what I can get by with for testing surplus Mausers.

Sure thing Redstar, I'll do some pics to go with it too maybe. I'm going to be offline for the majority of next week starting tommorw. But I'll put it on my to-do list.

Oh, BTW you are correct. Closing on a NO Go but not closing on the Field means its still acceptable to shoot the weapon. Go explains itself.

Thanks Shuetz! We'll miss you.

W2K- no not yet, I've still got my Yugo SKS all torn apart on my work bench (desk) right now and am still trying to finish it. I've been reworking the gouge in the stock over and over, I can't get the stain to my satisfaction on the repair I made.

Also, this move of the board has taken all my time since I got the K98. I'm thinking they're not there though because with the profusion you had on yours I should have seen some with the cursory inspection I gave it.

Still a nice Mauser when I get the bolt corrected. The bore is unbelievable.

I'll let you know when I take it down.
