Firearms near schools bill to be discussed
By KRISTA MARRS
Staff Writer
GILFORD — The Gilford School Board will discuss pending legislation that would ban possession of a firearm in a school zone when it meets tonight.
Rep. Bill Johnson, D-Gilford, is one sponsor of House Bill 1187, which would enact criminal penalties for possessing, discharging or attempting to discharge a firearm in a school zone.
However, there are some exceptions written into the bill, including being on private property, having an unloaded gun in a gunrack in a motor vehicle, or where a person has a license to possess the firearm.
A public hearing on the bill will take place Tuesday afternoon before the Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee in Room 204 of the Legislative Office Building in Concord.
Superintendent of Schools Steve Russell will also be updating the board on a letter from the New Hampshire Department of Education, which has granted the district conditional approval for the middle-high school facility. Russell said the approval is on a conditional basis because of the limitations the facility still has.
Other items on the agenda include an update from Middle High School Principal Tom Sica and High School Assistant Principal Mary Moriarty on the attendance policy and what feedback they have received from the staff and faculty members. The matter of setting a date for the March School District Meeting will also be before the board.
The Gilford School Board will meet in the library of the Gilford Elementary School beginning at 6 p.m.
