I just bought a Norinco underfolder and was wondering about putting a fancy set of sights on it .............
I like the ones in the movies that put out a little red circle on the target........
Is this a movie effect or is it a real thing? What's it called? Where do I get one?

Okay, on my own I have learned that what I'm looking for is called a "Laser Sight".
Now I'm sure that someone has mounted one of these sights on thier AK.................
I'm looking to get your feedback on the laser sight and some idea on how it looks and works on your AK.
Do you like it?
Does it hold up well on the AK?
Where did you get your's?
What kind do you have?
Can you post some pictures of the sight on your AK?
How well does the "red dot" show up in the bright day light?

Topcat, sorry no one else bothered to answer your question.
Some people like laser sights, I don't. Instead of learning/practicing/using good aiming/shooting habits you find yourself "hunting" for the little red dot. If all you're doing is target shooting or plinking then that's fine. But if it's more serious then you're in trouble, especially if the laser goes dead for whatever reason and you don't know it.
Laser sights have limited usefulness & range in daytime as it's much easier to pick out the dot at night.
IMHO you'd be much better off with some kind of red-dot reflex sight (like the Kobra collimator sight which was made for AKs, more info here: http://tantal.kalashnikov.guns.ru/ ) than a laser.

In general Tomac is right. At most a laser sight might have a psycological effect and some PD like them because a perp might not see the officer but will stop dead if he thinks he is being lased.
One real practical use of a laser is to illuminate the target area at night. I am a big fan of the PSO-1 scope- it is very bright. At night, you can use a laser to illuminate a dark hiding place at a distance. While it is not the same as white light, laser light will go farther, will not betray your position as much, and will give you enough light to shoot with. Try it!

What I think you're really looking for is a Red Dot style sight, not a laser. Laser sights project a red dot onto the target and are only effective a fairly close ranges. A red dot sight projects a red dot or hologram inside the sight itself. The most popular and rugged ones are Aimpoint and EOTech. There are other less expensive ones, but those are the ones used by police and military units worldwide.
Hope that helps.
I know what you are talking about Topcat. I remember 5-10 years ago when lasers were really getting big time that some brands/models had a switch on it for different patterns. You could choose between dot,X,cross,etc....
After a quick google search I found this.

Looks like just the ticket!
