1. The1917 MKIII was improved over the earlier versions due to war and the need for improvements. However these changes didnt come until late in 1917 and as such the number of 1917 MkIII* are limited. They are collectable due to the few manufactured for that year. 1918 MIII* are more common.

I can't tell for sure but is the magazine cut-off still there or has it been removed? I think I can see the cut for it.

Magazine cut-off? It was a little sliding "door" that closed off the magazine so that the rifle could be fired like a single-shot. Can't allow troops to "waste ammo" don't ya know.

The magazine cut-off is a lever that holds the magazine follower down so that as NC_Rebel said the weapon is to be operated like a single shot rifle. The US kept them on the Springfield rifles up to and including the 03A3 and A4 Sniper rifles used in WWII. Idea was to use the contents of the magazine only if near the enemy like they or you are charging a position. Ohterwise single load. Yeah, I know it's crazy thinking isn't it by our standards. :D

No, I can't find it on mine, it must have been removed somewhere down along the line......

As far as I know the official acceptance of the changes made in the MKIII vs the MKIII* was Jan 1916.

I actually had a MKIII* dated 1915 (sold it to a friend looking for a No.1 :(

BSA "started" production of the MkIII* in 1915, but most were manufactured after 1918.

It looks like there is some stampings, but wore very thin and can not make it out. THANKS FOR REPLY.PLEASE ADVISE::) :) :) :)

Well your disc is most likely a unit disk to identify what unit the rifle belonged to. A good closeup Pic would be able to confirm this.

Yeah, if you can get a pic, or at least tell us what it has stamped on it, we can look it up for you. :)
