The government has issued a three-week amnesty to West Pokot and Turkana residents to surrender illegal firearms as security forces prepared to launch a major crackdown on gun smugglers.
The amnesty comes amid fears that armed Ugandan Pokots fleeing voluntary disarmament in their country were selling weapons to Kenyans.
The West Pokot acting district commissioner, Mr Charles Chemjor, warned that the government would forcibly recover illegal firearms and that those who refused to heed the ultimatum would be prosecuted.
He added that the state would assess reports from the administrators at the end of the ultimatum before the start of the firearms retrieval.
In April last year, President Moi issued a month's amnesty for the surrender of illegal firearms in the country. However, only one gun was returned in West Pokot, fueling speculations that the new order might not bore any fruit.
