View Full Version : Safety Lever Problem (HELP!)

I just received the American Gunsmithing Institute's AKS/MAK armorer's course manual on video last night, so I popped it in the VCR and started to strip down the gun as they were doing it. At one point, the instructor realizes the safety had to be off for some particular maneuver, so I went to do the same and found that the lever was real tight and wouldn't move, so with not much force, the lever finally snapped into firing position and is now permanently stuck there.

The safety is behind the trigger and will not move up into the safety position to hold the trigger down. So, it's stuck in fire position but the trigger is all the way back and still will not release the hammer.

I can move the hammer up and down with my fingers by moving the secondary and primary sears, but the trigger seems to be stuck; won't move, and the damn safety lever won't budge much either.

Should I just punch the safety off and reinstall it? (I'm afraid I already bent something and don't want to do more damage) Does the safety mechansim bend that easily???!! I was amazed that such a highly maintainable gun was that easy to jam...took about 5 seconds and it was phuked.

Any help out there?

If all else fails, remove the locking spring and using a brass punch drive out the pivot pins. That should let it all fall apart and you can start over - slowly and gently.

Thanks. After some sleep, I re-examined the situation and noticed that the right end of the main wrapped wire spring had "rolled off" the right side of the disconnector. I took a screwdriver and lifted the spring back over and wham! works like a champ.

Actually, to be specific it rolled off the back right side of the trigger piece, not the disconnector.
