View Full Version : "Soft" Romanian steel?

Hi guys. I posted this same question in the "Romanian" and "Build it yourself" rooms, and I'll ask it again here to cover my bases.

I have a CUR 2 that has been modified to the "original" configuration using Hesse (US-made) internals. After app. 2,000 rds., I have substantial wear on the rear of the bolt carrier, bolt stem, and firing pin where they contact the hammer face. The metal has actually "mushroomed" (for lack of a better term), and one firing pin has been rendered inoperable so far. The replacement firing pin is likewise being "flattened."

I defer to the forum's expertise. What do you guys think? Is this the result of improperly hardened Romanian components, overly-hard US components, or does it have something to do with the mass, shape, or contact position of the US internals?

What's the best remedy...where should I begin?

Thanks guys.

There's a post on the Robinson Arms page at the Brand X AK site that I think answers your question: Robinson Arms reports that they tested a number of USA-made internals and found that many were excessively hardened. Said that excessively hardened internals would result in precisely the symptoms you describe. So I think replacing the hammer with one that has been properly hardened would fix your problem.

Thanks a bunch Sutro. Do you have a link to that site, or an addy?

Can't someone make parts right? Too soft, too hard, geez! That's beginning to happen to my bolt as well using an FSE hammer. I'm wondering where to look for a proper hammer and trigger set to use.

The Romanians know how to make hammers for Romanian guns. I believe that both Century and Tennessee Guns sell Romanian fire-control sets, and I bought a Romanian fire-control set from a fellow on this forum who goes by "TMAN". TMAN also has/had sets modified to fit the SAR-3 to resolve that guns notorious hammer problems.
