My collection is taking on a pretty heavy Russian bias so I thought I would balance it out by adding some German flavor.

When I stopped by my transfer dealer/gunsmith to pick up my SAR1 he mentioned that he had a K98 or possibly M98. I said great, let's look at it.

It's actually a M48 chambered in .308. It appears to be unissued and all matching except for bayonet. The top of the receiver has a torch logo and M48. One side of the receiver has cyrillic lettering followed by '44'. I assume that's the year.

After checking around on the net for awhile I haven't found anything about M48s chambered in .308. Can anyone here enlighten me?

Thanks,
Sesh

Never head of that either, just the converted K98's is all I've seen. Maybe it was a custom job??

Thanks for the answers. After prodding a bit more it turns out that my gunsmith was confused. First he called the gun a k98 then a m98 and it turns out to be a m48. After a few back and forth calls he finally says he enjoyed shooting the 8mm. WTF? So I told him no thanks since I can find an unissued m48 with more accessories for a lot less that $230. The guy builds custom Mausers so I figured he knew what he was talking about.
Still, he did a great job on the scope mount for my 91/30 EX-PU and has the cheapest transfers in town so I'll cut him some slack.

On a side note, a friend who was looking into this found a place that will convert 8mm to .308 using some kind of welded in sleeve.

Thanks again for the help.
