Why wouldn't I need a bolt hold open device?

The AK was meant to be fired on fully automatic, and a bolt hold open is not necessary. It's going to go bang, bang, bang, bang...bang, bang, click! you load a new mag, charge the gun, and spray another mag.

AK's don't hold the bolt open on the last shot - or manually, for that matter, either. Blasphemy, I realize, to say it - but I consider this a design flaw. No hold back could be very embarassing when your last round is shot under combat conditions: click! I've read that one solution under combat conditions is to have your last round be a tracer, but that unfortunately also notifies your adversary that you're out.
Combat aside, I find it annoying not to have a hold back just because I'm in the habit of keeping weapons clear when playing with them.
Some folks have made their AK's capable of manual hold-back by cutting a notch in the safety so that when it's on it catches the handle on the bolt carrier. Good idea, but looks lousy.
Sometimes you can get the bolt to hold back on an AK by pressing the trigger while holding the bolt carrier back, and then gently releasing the carrier with the hope that the hammer will catch it. This is basicly a jam, not a hold back, and isn't secure enough for my tastes.
If you take your AK to a public range, take something with you to wedge into the action to keep the bolt open during cease fires.

Incase you are wondering what the "notch method" looks like, here it is:
http://www.flashdistributor.com/akbolt1.gif
(Note: the picture is actually upside down  )
You just pull the charging handle to the rear and then flip the safety up and it catches and holds the bolt in place.
You can do this yourself with a Dremel or something on your current or spare safety. Or order one already notched from http://www.flashdistributor.com/ .
