I bought a very good condition SVT-40 from a guy for $300. All the ones at the gunshow I saw were in worse condition than mine and about $495. So is that a good pirce? Also I got a bayonet with it, the origonal one he said. AFTER teh purchase he mentioned that the bayonet was more rare than the rifle and he paid $250 just for the bayonet. Is there any truth to that, I figure there might be since he told me that AFTER the sale and I cannot find them any where.

Also i have read alot of stuff like the "failure of the svt-40 as a sniper" and so on. I have shot my gun alot and I think it preforms awesome. It only had jammed twice in extraction I think because of low quality ammo. Why do most people say it is a bad rifle? Can someone tell me about my rifle?

They are great rifles I have one and have shot it many times. They have an adjustable gas system like a FAL. Yes the bayonet is worth the same as or more than the rifle.

the SVT was one of the first semi-auto the soviets made, they also made the AVT which was a automatic version of the SVT. the ones that command a high price is the NAVAL INFANTRY (Marine)one.... a shorter version. Although the most common ones are TULA and ISHEVSK(sp), the arsenal at KOSVO(SP) are the rarer of the 2, producing less the 25,000..the arsenal mark is a cartouche with a arrow in it. some SVTs are snipers, indicated by 2 grooves on the receiver to have a scope mount slide on……real mounts run around 5-600 bucks. and yes the bayonets are rare and very expensive. I had a SVT made at the KOSVO arsenal and sold it for 550 last year.

from my uderstanding the SVT was a complictaed rifle to produce, compared to a M-N, or the PPSH.... and not as reliable as the M-N because it was not very "soldier proof"... the gas system literly has to be disassembled to clean, and with the small parts could easily get lost, thus putting the weapon out of action....but still it was a first attempt to field a semi-auto.

The SVT-38/40 only saw limited use as a sniper do to a lack of accuracy brought on mostly by the movement of the action during firing. Not to say that they are not capable of good accuracy just that the MN 91/30 was more so. Sounds like you got a very nice rifle at a bargain price. It's high on my wish list also. Happy shooting.
What ammo were you using?

Thanks man........I am using the 7.62x54r ammo from SOG. There ammo is by far the best quality 7.62x54 ammo i have bought, I bought some from classic arms and it was very old, alot of it had corrosion on the shells, green stuff, and it was so old it had the russian writing on a paper who packed it, it was packed in like 52. And the case looked like it had been rusting in a creek. ALot of the shells were dented and i was afraid to fire it

The SOG ammo was in a nice green case, no rust the ammo was the color of WOLF ammo, the green shell and stuff, very high quality ammo.
