View Full Version : Feed problems with Wolf FMJ?

Hello all...

I have a little problem, and it's not making sense to me.
I have three Maks, one Russian Commercial, and two Bulgarian Mil-surp. All three of them are having feed problems with Wolf 109 grain FMJ. It's the same type of malfuction in each: The nose of the round hangs up just inside the chamber. A slight tug back on the slide usually solves the jam, but I'm at a loss as to how to solve the problem. The Russian is getting it's chamber and throat polished, so I'll see how that works.

I'd think that this ammunition would give better feed reliability. Is anyone else having the same problem? What did you do to solve it?

Thanks in advance for your help,

m

Don't forget to polish the feed ramp too.

Its the feed ramp...
HP ammo in Russia, and Bulgaria for that matter is a fairly new invention... that is, before they started exporting to the US and elsewhere, HP ammo was almost unheard of. Therefore, these Makarov's are not 'made' to shoot HP's. My Makarov's have no problem shooting them and I have done no mod's whatsoever. However, some people have to. Your best bet is to polish the feed ramp and perhaps the throat of the chamber. Then, load 7 rounds instead of 8 in the mag.

Try this, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

Actually, the HP's feed fine. No problems with those at all. It's the Wolf FMJ that doesn't feed. I'm thinking it's the semiwadcutter-type bullet that's causing the malfunction...I'll get the feed ramps worked over regardless.

Semi-wadcutter and Wolf FMJ? I thought it was ball. All the FMJ I've ever bought was ball.

I was under the same impression. I am heading to the SHOT Show right now... I will stop by Wolf's booth...say hello to Mr. Filbert and see what they have along the lines of 9x18 bullet types.

Thanks,

I havent fired my Makarov yet, but my ammo arrived today. And loaded up my mags and i noticed that the 8th round was pretty tough to get in there? But I swear that they are 8 round mags. Anyone else get this?

BTW what exactly is required to "polish feed ramp & chamber throat"?

thanks

Maybe I should have said profile, not type...If you look at the Wolf ammo, it's not rounded like the older stuff. Older 9x18 looks more like .380 to me. This new Wolf ammo isn't rounded.
I think that's the problem.

I didn't mean that this ammo isn't ball. Just that the profile was different.

I read over at the Makarov board that the Wolf may be slightly long in the over all length. This may make it hang up in the mag or on the feed ramp. I have not had any problems with it in either of my maks but I have not shot a whole shit load of it either. Do you have any that you can mic out? I would be interested to see what the OAL is.

I had problems with the wolf stuff too. Look at the shape of the bullets. They are more conical than spherical. I now shoot the Polish 9x18 from AIM surplus (I bought 2k rounds) and have had no problems.

I have now shot a total of 1,200 Silver Bear Hollow Point rounds through my Bulgarian Makarov.

No problems....
