BATON ROUGE -- Lt. Gov. Kathleen Blanco and a gun safety group began a statewide blitz Tuesday to distribute up to 50,000 gun locks to firearms owners by the end of January.
The effort includes a giveaway at Zephyrs Field in Metairie on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and in Abita Springs on Saturday.
More than 12,500 locks will be available in the New Orleans area during the giveaway.
Blanco spokeswoman Chris DeWeese said about 2,000 locks were given away during the first day of Project HomeSafe in Baton Rouge.
Project HomeSafe is a national firearms safety education program sponsored by the National Shooting Sports Foundation and the National Conference of Lieutenant Governors. The program is expected to give away 3 million free gun locks nationwide this year.
The Louisiana Sheriffs' Association is working with Blanco's office in handing out the locks and demonstrating firearms safety.
DeWeese said about 10,300 locks will be available for the Zephyrs Field event, which will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.
In St. Tammany, more than 2,200 safety locks will be available Saturday at Abita Place, 22070 Louisiana 59 in Abita Springs. That giveaway will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
"I have hunted for many years," Blanco said. "This Louisiana tradition requires serious responsibilities in terms of gun safety. I think this program is a definite step in the direction of keeping our homes safe."
A project van will tour with Blanco and serve as a mobile classroom for firearms safety hints.
