Here in south east Virginny there is a store with a Bulgarian makrov for 165. I have hade experiances of poor metalurgy on the commercial Variety (Extractor deformation in the rear at only 200 rounds!)

Is the millitary model that much superior? Is it a good deal? Should I get it?

Depends on the condition and extra's. The wife picked one up for $200. It came with 3 mags,(2 were numbered), holster, cleaning rod, hardcase and 100+ rounds. After shipping and FFL we would have easily paid that for one off the net with the same stuff but as it was local and a trusted dealer we had to go for it.

I wouldn't credit the problem you had with the commercial one to differences in manufacture of the two styles too quickly. She also has a commercial that she has had much longer than the surplus. It has had well over 2000 rounds and the biggest problem she had with it was getting the grit worn off the trigger, (about 300 rounds).

That's an average price for a gun store. You could probably do better at a show, but there is nothing wrong with paying a little extra to keep the local gun store in business. If it's in mint condition, I'd buy it. If it looks well used, I'd pass. I agree with MISRy. The problem with your other Makarov had nothing to do with it being a commercial version. It was just bad luck. I have four commercial Makarovs and have not had a single problem with any one of them.
