View Full Version : Where did my shells go?

About a month ago I was firing my SAR-1 and I didn’t see any of my shells during cleanup. Right as I was about to leave a guy handed me my empty shells. He was about
four lanes down (last lane) and had a wooded wall to his right. I think the rounds were hitting this wall. It was about 16 to 20 feet down from me. If I remember correctly I was using Winchester ammo. Is it normal for the shells to eject that far?

Yup, the AK throws brass a lot further than most. My buddy's M1A leaves a nice pile of brass about 1 ft from his boots in a nice pile. By contrast my AK's sling empties to the right and forward, almost 15 ft sometimes!

It's really simple, just follow steering and flow with it. You see, Ironhand's my thing!

Next time you go shooting point your rifle down range and don't look at the sights. Watch the brass as it it ejected. You will be amazed at how far it goes. Some military surplus ammo will kick the brass 25 feet+ downrange.

Your shells probably landed about 20-30 feet foreward and to the right of where you were shooting. Every AK I've ever fired chucks em out pretty hard.

I usually know where my shells are while firing at the NRA HQ range. They bounce of the booth wall to my right and land on my head. I wear ear-mufflers instead of plugs for fear of getting a shell stuck in my right ear.

My mini-14 does the same thing. Its really violent at throwing brass.I often have to make sure Im to the right of all shooters and bystanders because my brass has hit a few kids that were where they should not have been playing, about 2-3 feet to the right of me.Ouch!!!!Dont think Id be happy using this in close confines as brass would be bouncing everywhere.Same with my SAR-1 although Id say my mini spits it further. :D :D :D ;) ;)

Sounds like my trip to Clark Brothers range in VA a couple months ago. I was shooting my SLR-100 and the casings were hitting a post near the end about 9 feet up. This was about 4/5 lanes over. Had to put up a brass deflector. I have yet to make it to the NRA HQ range with an AK, but should be going soon as I live about 5 minutes away from it.

Bishop.....

I was out at Clark Bros. about 2 mos ago also. I was watching an AK spit casings from the middle lane which were landing on the guy on the last lane on the right. He had a friend hold a net to catch them after he realized where they were landing. When I was there.....Clark Bros. didn't have squat for 7.62 ammo. Don't they require that any ammo you fire on the range be purchased from them? The ammo they did have stocked seems to be expensive.

It wasn't me was it? I'm a big dude with blonde hair and glasses, and I had a couple of friends with me and we also shot a Remington 700 PSS in .308. It was probably someone else, but just thought I would check. Yeah, Clark does charge ridiculous prices for their 7.62 ammo. I think it was $5 and change for a box of 20 of Wolf. For that price if I bought a case it would cost $300. For that price I could get close to 4 cases of 1000!! Needless to say we didn't shoot much. And they only had Wolf and some other brand which I can't remember. I also shoot my Armalite and my Yugo M48 there sometimes.

Bishop....
Might have been you...though I don't recall glasses. I was looking at a Remington 700 PSS at the Silverado Gun Show in Upper Marlboro a few weeks back. The price looked good at about $775, though I chickened out and didn't get it. http://www.ak-47.net/akcgi/frown.gif Maybe next year.

Have you heard about the shoot down near Farmville, VA on the 21st of April. It looks about 2 hours South of Warrenton on Route 15. Details are posted on the AR-15.com forum. Should be a blast. My Kobra should be arriving from Tantal any day now, so I hope to zero it at NRA HQ Range before the Farmville shoot. http://www.ak-47.net/akcgi/tongue.gif

Aw man! I am going up to West Virginia that weekend. That sounds pretty sweet. I've never gone to something like that, but I would like to. I'll be on the lookout for other VA events.

Modern Military firearms are designed to toss their shell casings a great deal away from the shooter so that they are not seen by the enemy as neat little piles of brass near you the target. Thats why the Russian ammo is green lacquered not shiny brass too!

Steel Core.......I never really thought of that, but it makes good sense. Amazing the little tidbits of knowledge that are gleaned from this site. http://www.ak-47.net/akcgi/tongue.gif

Hey how about a brass catcher for the ak-47 to collect the stuff?

My SAR-1 always shoots the brass pretty far. It shoots it straight to the right though. As a rusult I always try to get the far right lane when I go shooting. I relizied this after I pepered some guys with a winchester 94 with my brass.

Where are you going to be? If you're anywhere near Huntington, you're more than welcome to come shooting at our unsupervised range here. I can drum a few of the irregulars and we'll put a few downrange.

Be seeing you.

remember the ak is made to shoot in any situation. in the extreme cold, while others fail. the ak will still be chunking brass! mud or whatever, it cleans its self.

Plus, it is impossible to describe the cool factor of showering three lanes with hot casings. The irregulars here all own AKs and it is a fun thing to take them all to the range. The look on the faces of the "fire two shots to zero it in"-type hunters as four or so people pull AKs out of their cases is priceless! Three or four 30rd mags of rapidfire later, the range is clear and we can shoot seriously without any interruptions.

Be seeing you.
