How do I take off the top hanguard?

I'm sure I'm missing something very simple and easy.

Just grab a hold of the exposed gas tube metal with one hand. Grab the wood with the other hand and twist the wood handgaurd around 180 degrees. The wood can then be pulled off.

If it is reeeaaalll tight, you might have to brace the gast ube somehow. Maybe a wrench or vise at the back of the gas tube at the flat sides.
