Dear Fellow Members-Thank God for Mosin-Nagant.net!This may be basic to many of you,but I did NOT know what the third notch back on the gas valve was for!After removing the gastube,push the button down and back until it lines up with the third hole or notch.Jiggle a lttle and the pushbutton should come out.You may have to turn the rifle upside down to get the spring out.The Gas valve should then slip out for cleaning.Hope this helps!:)-Gearhead.
