Once again the Panzer rolled out to the range this Saturday. This time I brought my newly refinished 91/30, M44, SAR-1, & Tarus .40. My neighbor also went with his scoped Ruger 22.
My neighbor is very new to guns and has not fired many. This was his first exposure to a bolt action and a large caliber round. He lined up in lane next to me, eyeing my AK that he loves & trying to decide what to fire first when I blasted some of my 'new' Albanian 88 in my M44. That got his attention! :) He quickly grabbed my 91/30 and we fired at anything on the berm that wasn't dirt. The M44 ate the Albanian (it didn't like the Czech) with ease although both guns got stubborn half way through the session and I realized that both needed their screws tightened *good lesson for newbies to these guns*.
Yes, the M44 was the head turner for the day. It wasn't long before the SAR joined the action though and I basically held it up and in front of me and decimated a cardboard box at the 15 yard mark. The resulting large cloud of dust from the HP rounds could be seen as it exited to the side. The SAR is still jamming so I've decided to make a pact with myself not to buy another gun until it is fixed by a gunsmith.
I brought a lucite block (is this the same stuff they make 'bulletproof' glass out of?) about 5x5" and put it against the berm but we never nailed it full on. One shot nailed it right ON the corner and chipped it. We had to dig it out of the dirt as it became buried from the heavy barrage around it.
We didn't pick up the .22 until all the other ammo was exhasted. Also, I've found that my Tarus is not as much fun to me as the rifles... We sighted in the .22 which was cool because my neighbor just thought the scope sucked and didn't know about adjusting it. It was pretty much dead on when we left. The .22 was a nice change after the punishing rounds we had fired as we could concentrate on aim and not positioning of the stock.
All in all, another kick ass day. Approx 500 rounds later, the Panzer rolled out with two happy, tired soldiers, already talking about how much fun we had. The 91/30 is still "shedding" crap from its bore after being fired. I have to get some of that snotty stuff Gearhead told me about. This brings me to the only downside of the day: Cleaning 5 guns. :p
