I love this swiss stuff! It reeks of quality!

Ok, so I open up this GP-11 ammo, and there's some rubbery feeling sealant around the case and bullet..... what is this stuff??

Shawn,
The rubbery stuff at the rim of the GP11 bullet is wax. There has been a post or two on swiss rilfes.com and that is what they said there.

It's supposed to be there. Leave it be.

It's Swiss beeswax. Sealant and bullet lubricant all in one.

Are these actually non-corrosive? I have heard that a lot of 7.62x54R is actually corrosive although it is advertised sometimes as non. Should I worry about this stuff? Will this beeswax poop up my barrel if i don't clean it out in 3 minutes?

The guys on the SRF don't seem to have a problem with the wax...

Ok listen up here . . . Swiss ammo in GP-11 cartridges has not been corrosive since 1911. Unpucker the cheeks! ;) Is the wax going to goop up your barrel, well the Swiss shot their ammo like this up to the present day and they used these cartridges in STG57 select fire assault rifles and beltfed machineguns. What do you think?

But the answer is no I don't believe it's going to goop up your barrel. I do believe it will prevent quite a bit of throat wear on a jacketed bullet. Beeswax is an excellent lubricant for providing barrier film lubrication. I believe they have put something else in the wax like perhaps a small amount of a softer wax substance like Lanolin for example. Beeswax is hard like a candle and this stuff is a little bit chewy or gummy. It's not rock hard and it clings pretty good if picked at or bumped.

I have no intentions of removing it as I think the guys that invented the stuff knew what they were doing.:D

Respectfully? Say it didn't sound like I was yelling in the responce at you did it? If so I'm sorry I was just trying to be amusing.

BTW that bottom K31's stock in the other post sure looks a bunch better than the one I kept. I will have to refinish that one it's so stained, kind of gray looking and nasty about 2 to 3 inches up from the buttplate.

Shawn, did you take the buttplate off to look for the owners ID tag on them yet?

DORK!!! I said respectfully because i respect you and thank your for all your help. Not because you were acting like a dick :)

The K31's have decent stocks, and the lower one in the picture definitelly does have a nice stock. I don't know anything about woodworking, and plan on refinishing the stock someday in the future.

The more used K31 had the name in the buttplate. I think it was the coolest part about taking the guns apart. A lot of fun to imagine what the guy looked like and where he may have carried the gun. Unfortunatelly the other one (newer looking one) did not have a name in it. I think it's because the rifle is unissued (I wish! :) )
