What are the laws concerning the modification of C&R firearms? Can you put different stocks on them? Can you remove parts from them? i.e. granade launchers, original sights, compensators, ect. Can you cut the barrel down? (no less than 16 inches)
I figure these laws are federal, but I'm not sure. They could differ state to state. Thanks.

You can do anything you want to a C&R firearm as with any other private firearm. You cannot however resell it as a C&R until you have returned it to it's original configuration. Replacing worn or broken parts, refinishing the wood or metal, etc., while not necessarily increasing the collectibility of the weapon, do not change it's C&R status. I'm not sure if rebarreling in the same caliber would effect it or not. For example. Replacing the stock on a Russian SKS with an aftermarket fiberforce type stock renders it's C&R status null and void. On the other hand a Yugo 59/66 without it's GL and other additions may, and I mean MAY be considered an M59 and therefore OK. Either way, anything you do should only come into play if you want to sell it as a C&R.

Great. Thank you. I have had some other people tell me ALMOST the same thing. I just wanted to make sure that they weren't talking out their arse. Thanks again.

Thank you, Zouave. Glad to be here. I am very impressed with the level of knowlege on this board. I have gotten more information here, than anywhere else. Great resource. You guys have motivated me to get my CRFFL so that I too can obtain some of great firearms with a little history behind them. I can't wait to build my collection. My wife, however, can wait. I'll have to see what I can do about that.
