I dont mean this as a flame but you should Never take steel wool or solvents of any kind to that at all.Items like this left the way they are have more value.Believe me I learned my lesson cleaning up a very dirty Ritterkreuz(Iron cross).Although I did not damage it,it was worth more as is as it shows age.

Putting it under glass is a great idea Zouave. Make sure you get those nasty figner prints off it. You wouldn't want it to rust Neil.

1. It seems to be made of brass alloy, I have gotten my fingerprints off of it and placed in my wifes curio cabinet. I told it she needed to put it there as it was one of her family treaures.:D
