I have a Mauser that was given to me by my grandfather. His story behind it is........

His father took it off a German solder near the end of WWII.

It has been, not by my hand, "Bastardized" into a sporting rifle. Oh, the humanity! I was checking a few of the threads on this site and found this link, http://home.arcor.de/gssw1997/k98.htm.

I went home at lunch and checked my rifle. These are the markings I found..

(on receiver TOP) S/237
(on receiver TOP) 1938
(on receiver LEFT) 42075
(on barrel LEFT, bolt, follower, floor plate, ect.) 8352
(various other places) eagles holding "26" & swastikas in their claws.

This is the closest match I could find on that site.

Hersteller-Code (Manufacturer Code) S/237

Serien-Nr. Beginn (Begining Serial #) 5474

Serien-Nr. Ende (Ending Serial #) 7962d

hergestellte Stückzahl (Number Produced) 84692

Baujahr Hülsenkennung (Year) 1938

Hersteller (Manufacturer) Berlin-Lübecker Maschinenfabrik

Does the "d" in the Ending Serial # mean that they reached 9999 and started over with 0001a - 9999a to 0001b - 9999b and so on?

That would be my take on it for the alpha part of the serial number.
