has anyone tried really light bullet weights in realoading for 7.62x39? I am referring to 90gr XTPs and 71gr ball rounds made for 30 tok and 32 acp, respectively.
I'm asking becaause when I went to teh local shop to order some 90 gr XTPs, the guy thought I was loading them into a rifle round. I told him, nah, it's for a pistol and showed him the round. But, I was wondering, hawt kind of velocities and respective damage could you get from such a combination?
I thought about that or the speer plinkerhalf jacket when I got my first SKS but my dad told me he didn't think they would feed ,so I wasn't very motivated to try, and never got around to trying.Do ya think it would cycle? Maybe I'l have to break those dies back out for giggles on water filled milk jugs!

Tell us if they will feed or not.Good luck!

Tried 90 grainers in my 30.06 most inaccurate round I ever handloaded. Kept them down around 2800fps and they wouldn't do 5" at 50 yards

most likely because you had insufficient twist to stabilize the round...like the AR using 55 grain bullets with a 1:14 twist.

What velocity could you achieve, max? Anyone tried saboted .22s in a 7.62x39?

Now that I think about it, that's really odd. I mean, a 90 grain bullet should be really squat, right? And the 'shorter' the bullet is, the easier to stabilize it should be. As far as I know, longer bullets, all else equal, are harder to stabilize. So shouldn't a little 90-grain round stabilize especially well in a .30-06? Also, the shift was towards a lighter weight, and the twist rate was tightened in the M-16 when they UPPED the weight. Hmm...

well, I heard (HEARD!) that in an AR, using a 1:7 twist, 55 grain soft points would disintegrate a couple feet from the muzzle.

I've shot 52gr. Sierra bullets through my 1 in 7 spacegun with good accuracy. The thin jacketed "varmit" bullets will typically not hold together at those rotational velocities.

Naw, 1x7 won't blow bullets as long as you keep your velocities down and stay above 50 grains. Going past 3100fps with 52grainers is not recommended.
