I've heard from several people that shooting a Galil (especially the .308) with a scope using a mount that attaches to the slot in the receiver can cause the receiver to crack. None of the people repeating this story had first hand experience, they were just repeating what they had heard.
Anyone know if this is true or B.S.? I'd like to know more before I use my scope mount.Thanks.

M77: That's total BS!!!The GALIL recv. is one of the strongest around being milled instead of stamped(which by the way is still strong) I do not know who is spreading this bullshit but in in the 15 years I have been dealing with the GALIL rifle I have never ever heard this happen.
Get your scope mount and enjoy!!!

RangerSXT: Thanks for your input;I've always found this rumor hard to believe, too. It pops up in various forums and just won't die.
I've got a mount but have never had it on the rifle.
Actually, there is a type of Galil scope mount that can crack the receiver.
There is a "Screw Type Mount", that if OVERTIGHTENED, will crack or punch a hole through the receiver.
The best scope mount is the "throw lever type". It is expensive and difficult to find, but will not damage the receiver.
Moral of the story is: Don't overtighten the screw type mount or better yet - use the throw lever mount.
Hope this helps.

The Action Arms screw-type mount is what I have. I have been told that this mount can crack the receiver, but I was skeptical because the person that told me was selling throw-lever mounts and I thought he might be trying to scare me in order to make a sale.
Anyone else have any input on this?

YOG: Is correct..You do not want to overtighten the mount. Though personally I still have never heard of one cracking from anyone. I can see this as a possibility if the mount is tightend to much. http://www.ak-47.net/akcgi/biggrin.gif
