I've now got two coats of varnish on my Yugo's teak and I can't believe how great it looks;it's like I've got a new rifle. It really brings the teak to life.

I first sanded the wood lightly with #320 fine sandpaper to smooth it out and remove any embedded dirt and grime, then removed the dust with damp lint-free cotton patches. I let it air dry and then used a tack cloth to remove any remaining dust. I then applied the first coat of varnish with a foam sponge brush(they work well, and since they're cheap can be thrown away instead of having to clean them). I used Z-Spar Captain's Varnish #1015 that I bought at West Marine. The next day I did a very light sanding and repeated the process. I only removed the pistol grip, upper handguard/gas tube and rubber butt-pad;the foam brush is precise enough to keep the varnish off the metal if you're reasonably careful. It helps to do all this in a room without a lot of dust that will stick to the varnish during application or drying.

The finish will knock you out;it makes the rifle look like a work of art. Best of all,if a schmuck like me can do it,anyone can.
